Before we get to today’s schedule, let’s look ahead.

LL_Game-Day-CROPPED16Opening-round games were completed in Connecticut yesterday, and quarterfinal-action is set for Saturday, June 1. Among the June 1 matchups: Greenwich at Staples (Division L) and Wilton at Darien (Division M). Check the brackets and full schedule here.

Group champions were crowned in New Jersey yesterday, which awaits the start of the season-ending Tournament of Champions.

Now, to New York.

All six Long Island boys/girls championship matchups for this weekend will be set after today’s Suffolk Class A and B title games between Bay Shore and Ward Melville (Class A) and Sayville and Eastport-South Manor (Class B). Action is set for Saturday at Hofstra for the LIC boys tripleheader (state quarterfinals). Here’s the rundown.

In Suffolk title games yesterday, Ward Melville won its 23rd county crown — but first since 2000 — and Miller Place, in just its fourth year at the varsity level, took the Class B title. Here’s more.

Headling yesterday’s Nassau girls title tripleheader at Adelphi, Manhasset unseated rival Garden City, ending the Trojans’ run of seven straight state titles and eight straight county crowns.

Connecticut started its state tourney yesterday, and among the quarterfinal matchups now set for Saturday: Wilton at Darien (Division M) and Greenwich at Staples (Division L).

Let’s segue to today.

It may be the most anticipated first-round playoff game in New York state boys lacrosse tournament history.

And it became even more anticipated when yesterday’s scheduled Section 1 vs. Section 2 opening-round state playoff tripleheader was postponed until today because of the threat of severe thunderstorms.

Unbeaten Niskayuna, ranked No. 2 in the most recent Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Power Rankings, faces No. 6 Yorktown, which accounts for six of the 10 Hudson Valley All-American selections that were made earlier this week, in a Class B first-round game at the University at Albany.

It’s a game that’s a tossup, and the votes in our latest “You make the call” poll illustrate just that.

The winner advances to the state quarterfinals on Saturday, June 1. (For boys and girls state tournament brackets in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, click here.)

Yorktown-Niskayuna is the first game of a Section 1 vs. Section 2 first-round tripleheader, followed by Bronxville vs. Glens Falls (Class C) and Mamaroneck vs. Shenendehowa (Class A). The latter matchup pits the two-time Section 1 champs against a Shen team (16-3) that dealt Yorktown one of its two losses.

Also today, Stepinac hosts St. Mary’s at 4 p.m. in the CHSAA Division A downstate title game.

Today we will find out who wins the Tewaaraton Trophy, college lacrosse’s version of the Heisman. Four of the five men’s finalists are New York natives. The five finalists are: Rob Pannell (Cornell), Marcus Holman (UNC), JoJo Marasco (Syracuse), Tom Schreiber (Princeton) and Lyle Thompson (Albany).

    Nisky 13-11 Final
    Nisky is an outstanding team
    Towns biggest problem today, turnovers.

  26. LacrosseInsider says:

Wow- 6 AA’s, all that talk of best offense ever…..Nisky must be really good!

  27. slacrosse says:

As sec1 said Nisky is an outstanding team and so is Town–Nisky ended up having the edge today!

I’d like to see Nisky take apart Garden City. Definitely a real possibility.

  28. sec1 says:

Now that I’m out of the Sun, let me say that Nisky has the best Attack that I have seen in a while.
Town lost this game by not finishing and Turnovers, period.

    • Iceman says:

I agree with sec1’s comment. That was the difference. Town turned the ball over 4 – 5 times in the fourth without a lot of. Pressure on them. They seemed rattled

  29. The Katt says:

Well yet another lost season for TOWN LAX Great wins great National rank and nothing to show for it. Twice today up by two goals and blow it with sloppy play. This would not happen to JT or GW. How many AA? on Town this year. How many all section players? Nisky was a good team Town’s sloppy play made them better. TURNOVERS loose games. CUSE you know what I am Talking about. Let’s hope they can figure this out soon it has been way to long since TOWN was a State Champ. Again Cuse you know what I am saying. And this year was prime for the taking. It’s a long ride home.

    • laxr says:

Typical Yorktown fan who will never, ever admit that they got beat by a better team. Yorktown was great this year -better than they have been in a while – but Niskayuna is better.

      • # says:

Laxr …No one said Nisky wasn’t a great team. The Katt just said turnovers hurt Yorktown.

The Katt: you cant compare the sport of lacrosse from the days of JT with now. The competition and commitment from the Tri-State has completely changed. The growth of the sports has a lot to do with it, don’t you think? And btw Coach Marr is the only one to win a State Title in Section One in the last 10 years.

    • Syracuse says:

Niskayuna is a great team. They are a very well coached team. They deserved the win for not getting rattled at the end. Their goalie Quinn is rock-solid. Goldstock is other worldly and will excel at UNC. D’Amario, Prendergast, the list goes on. I wish them luck the rest of the way and hope they get their elusive state title. I really do.

Yorktown will be back, as they always do. Remember they will have THREE returning All-Americans. Vercruysse will shoulder a big load next season, but he’s got character on top of loads of ability. Palmadesso returning for draws gives Town that weapon that few teams have and only leads to wins, plus he’ll get to produce more points. Fusco on close, wow. You got strength right down the middle of the field. Guys like Strassman, Nick Del Bene, Baker will only improve. Nicky B is a leader on attack. Plus Rodriguez at the pole and who knows where else Marr uses him. Graham in net. Yorktown will be fine.

I feel bad for guys like Prestreau and Manning, who I’ve gotten to know. Classy kids who have the whole world in front of them. Same with Mariano, who was and will continue to be tremendous.

But all that said, I think at this point it’s more important to rally behind Bronxville. Good luck to Coach Horgan and the Broncs.

  31. LaxLessons.com says:

Bronxville leads Glens Falls 5-1 after one quarter of play in the NY Class C state regional semifinals at the University at Albany.

  32. Roy Colsey says:

    Huskers,
You have given Yorktown fans across the country a reason to smile, a reason to celebrate and a reason to be proud all season long. Your effort, your achievements and your excellence have not gone unnoticed. Losing the last game of the season is brutal and there are no words to make that any easier. I was, have been and continue to be proud to be a Husker and proud to call players like you my high school team. Heads up. Chests out. You have represented us with dignity and pride…that’s all that any alumni could ask for. Thank you for carrying on a proud tradition to the best of your ability. Do not let the anonymous bloggers get you down…you were a pleasure to watch and follow all season long.

  33. sec1 says:

    Bronxville 14-2 at Half

  34. Roy,

you are correct. I applaud the entire Yorktown Lacrosse program, and anyone who has the drive to be the best he/she can be. Let’s remember these are High school players, not college or pro. Each year Yorktown Lacrosse is held to a standard which is almost impossible to meet. Yet every year that I can remember you see these young men in the sectional final and state tournament. Be proud of what you did Sports are not about winning or loosing, they are about trying and doing the best you can. I look forward to next season with eager anticipation. Thanks for the memories of a season well played.

  35. LaxLessons.com says:

    16-2 Bronxville after three b

    • LaxLessons.com says:

Two-time NY Class C state semifinalist Bronxville downs Glens Falls 20-3 in the regional semis.

  36. sec1 says:

    20-3 BVille Final

  37. BH says:

could not agree more with the comments above. The young men of YTown should be extraordinary proud of their accomplishments this season. It may take a day, week or longer but they they should be proud of how well they represented YTown and Section 1. Chins up, work hard, and keep getting better.

  38. LaxLessons.com says:

Shenendehowa leads Mamaroneck 8-6 at the half of the NY Class A regional semis.

  40. LaxLessons.com says:

    Final: Shenendehowa 13, Mamaroneck 8

  41. slacrosse says:

    Mamo loses 13-8

    • Iceman says:

Mamo team offense was nonexistent. Mamo attack could have taken over this game. Instead they went one on one and took poor shots. Congrats to mamo on a second sect title.

      • Sputh of 287 says:

Shen is good; Mamo needed to play a complete team game in order to beat them. Been a noce run last two years, next year will miss the seniors and the following 2 years aftermthat they have lots of talent in pipeline.

Great job Class of 2013 Mamo lax

  42. Still Bleed Green says:

6 All -Americans, 9 All -Section and both coaches of the year in B. Think we all expected more. In watching both teams I still think with at least 10-11 Division 1 players on the field Yorktown was a more talented team. Sorry to say it, but this just as much coaching as it was execution. Sometimes you do have to adjust to what the other team does, and not just what you do.I refer back o the Somers game. Coaches Lou and Dalton had a master plan that in 6v6 held a very potent and more talented defense at bay and there was no adjustment. Most if not all the goals in that game were transition errors or extra man. Maybe Lou and Dalton should have won coaches of the year, just for the fact that they got where they did, with a very inexperienced defense, to go along with losing four starters on that side of the ball. A Somers team that has maybe two or three Div 1 players if that, No AAs and maybe two or three All-section?? Talking about making chicken salad out of chicken poop. The JJ game was just one team not showing up that day. Dave concentrate a little more on coaching and adjusting instead of arguing ref calls that happened ten minutes ago. Nisky attack is legit, not taking that away, but Pound for pound Yorktown is a better squad. And for that this is dissapointing. To our seniors Good Luck you all will be very successful college players.

    • ? says:

Still Bleed Green … Maybe you should let your color dry up! No one in Yorktown is interested in the hate. Im sure its bitter memories of bench sitting driving your ridiculous comments. For one, Coach Marr said nothing at all to any ref yesterday so clearly you were not at the game. In fact, it was the Nisky coaching staff who refused to shake our boys hands prior to the start and who pushed a ref at the half. If you are talking about the Jay game, how about realizing that Coach Marr was angry cause his kid was taking a beating after the whistle and didn’t want any injuries… Its called protecting your players. Not that its any of your business. Watch in on MSG Varsity to see for yourself! And if you think for one minute the staff doesn’t spend countless hours preparing for each game then you really are as stupid as you sound! Don’t you think everyone involved wanted more. Should the coaches have gone out there a caught the missed passes for the kids, held the kid from going off sides? move the goal so they wouldn’t hit the crossbar… Do you not think those kids were given adjustments. And like I just said they are KIDS! And as to your point about Lou, remember it was close for a while but Yorktown did adjust (your words) and WIN. The AA were justified they killed every section one team by an average of 14 points. Nisky is number 2 for a reason. I think its time you hung up your green!

    • Y says:

BTW those coaches were put up for and voted on by other the section one coaches. You should hang up your Yorktown Jersey no true Towny would bash a coach for sticking up for his players. Watch the beating number 7 takes after the whistle on MSG Varsity.
Old memories of the bench coming back.

    • Insight says:

Nisky was a better team, the better team won…Yorktown can make as many excuses for their poor execution as they want, that’s why they’re called excuses.

      • Yup says:

Insight … its only fans making excuses don’t lump the team or coaches in your blanket Yorktown statement. Nisky is 2 for a reason. And NO ONE connected to the team has said anything! However, poor execution can hurt a teams chances of win that’s not an excuse that’s a fact no matter what team or sport you play at any level!

  43. ? says:

Still bleed green … You should be stripped of your Yorktown jersey, you have no idea the countless hours these coaches spend preparing for games. Coach Marr didn’t open his mouth once yesterday you obviously weren’t at this game to have a clue! In fact it was Nisky coaching staff that didnt shake our boys hands prior to game and shoved a ref at half time. Don’t you think the entire team wanted more for themselves this year! Don’t you think the coaching staff told the kids adjustments . I would love to throw some not nice words at you right now but it’s a public site!! Coaches can’t go out there and play the game for them.
And if your referring to the jay tech call watch the game again and see that Coach Marr was mad because one of his players was being beaten up and so much so he was bleeding. Dumb ass that’s called protecting your players. But I guess that’s why he is the head coach and you are on the side lines watching!

    • slacrosse says:

Got to agree with? on the J kid two times quickly j in a row beating on Town kids–very surprised he was not penalized. Not defending Marr for losing control but he had a reason to be really frustrated and angry.

  44. Green&White says:

Congratulations Town on another great season. Although you may have fallen short on your quest of another State Title, you at least were in the hunt the entire year. Loosing at anything is never easy and is brutal to say the least. However it is better to play and loose then to not have played at all. And to “the Katt’ while I appreciate your passion and understand your disappointment, lacrosse is worlds different today then it was in the 70’s 80′ or even the 90’s. As I recall there was a time when Town was in the state finals or semi finals year after year. One final thought Town has what like 6-7 State Titles and something like 35-36 sectional crowns. Think of all the schools throughout the country that play Lax that have never been to a sectional final let alone a State Final.Take pride in what your team has done throughout the years, Also remember these are HIGH SCHOOL kids. Not adults Not pro’s So take heart HUSKER NATION Spring will be here soon enough and we can start this debate all over again. To all the teams, coaches, and players in the tournament good luck, and lets hoper that none of these fine young men gets injured. Go TOWN

  45. rlaxfamily says:

Congratulations to all of the Yorktown Huskers Boys Lacrosse Program. You had an outstanding run this season– the chemistry with this team will be talked about for years to come. The coaching staff did an outstanding job and I know you are proud of what the boys accomplished. Don’t forget that you all belong to something special that no one else can understand no one other that a true Husker. Thanks for making this a great season for all the fans.

  46. Doid23 says:

Great year for Town, disappointed in the loss to Nisky, but nothing to be ashamed of, Nisky is obviously a quality team. Thought that Town may have been able to break through and get to the Championship, but not to be.
