It’s playoff time in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed.

LL_Game-Day-CROPPED16Last week, New Jersey completed several of its county tournaments. Among the champions: Don Bosco Prep (Bergen) and Seton Hall Prep (Essex).

Yesterday, Nassau County started postseason action. Among the highlights: defending New York Class B state champion Garden City beat Bethpage 17-4.

Today, we will learn the seedings for the Section 1 Tournament. Yorktown is expected to be the No. 1 seed in Class B, but even though the Huskers are unbeaten in Section 1, it’s not a given based on the won-loss formula used.

Suffolk County postseason action starts on Thursday, May 16. For the playoff brackets in the ultra competitive Section 11 Class A, click here.

Now, to today’s schedule.

First-round Nassau County action continues. Among the games, Hicksville plays Farmingdale at 5:30 p.m. at Hofstra University. You can watch it live on MSGVarsity.com.

In New Jersey, Delbarton battles Chatham for the Morris County title at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham. Watch it live at 7:30 p.m. on MSGVarsity.com.

After nearly upsetting St. Anthony’s before bowing by a goal earlier this season, Iona Prep will give its best shot against Chaminade at 4:30 p.m. in Mineola.

In a pair of CT/NY crossover clashes, Ridgefield visits Somers at 7 p.m. and New Canaan visits Rye at 5 p.m.

Among FCIAC games, Darien hosts Stamford at 4 p.m., Greenwich plays at Westhill at 5:45 p.m., Trinity Catholic visits Norwalk at 7 p.m. and rivals Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Warde meet at 7 p.m. at Warde’s Tetreau/Davis Field.

Here’s a link to a recent article on FCIAC.net which lists the ranking of FCIAC teams for qualification to the post-season tournament, results do not include this past weekend’s action. Personally I don’t think seedings have any particular effect upon a team’s success in the post-season, playing well matters much more. But for those who care deeply about such things, here’s the lastest until the results are updated later this week. Games for the Top 8 get underway Saturday at the home field of the first four seeds.

8-5. New Canaan over Rye.. Congrats to NC, an obviously very talented team.

The main negative for Rye was too many unforced errors ( NC “s also suffered from undorced errors and errant shots shots in the 1st half). You can’t give away offensive opportunities and unnessarily give the ball back to a team like NC. Credit as well to NC’s D which was stingy in terms of letting Rye penetrate.

The good news was that I thought on the whole Ryes D looked good and against a skilled NC offence. Also II think everyone at the game would agree that the score could have easily been at least 7-6 with one NC score coming from a Rye pole slipping and falling down allowing a point blank score + Rye missing a point blank shot shooting it right into the NC goalies stick (credit to the goalie’ reflexes). Rye also, dominated FO’s.

Eliminate those unforced errors. A goes tough tune up for the play-offs.
