It be will a day of some noteworthy firsts.

Perennial New York state title contender Yorktown will play its first game on its new turf field with a 4:30 p.m. game against Putnam Valley, which happens to be coached by one of the top defenders in school history, former YHS and Johns Hopkins All-American Brian Kuczma.

Former Lakeland (N.Y.) High School and Syracuse University star Ric Beardsley will make his debut as head coach at Christian Brothers Academy with a game against LaFayette. (With snow in the forecast, the game’s status is in doubt, however.)

Defending New York Class C state champion Shoreham-Wading River looks to improve to 2-0 when it visits Babylon.

Another defending state champ, Garden City, will be eager to bounce back from seeing its 24-game win streak end in a loss Saturday to La Salle when it hosts Carey at 4:30 p.m.

Two-time Section 1 Class B finalist John Jay also looks to rebound. The Indians, who lost to Yorktown on Saturday night, host Horace Greeley at 5 p.m.

In other games of note, Somers (N.Y.), fresh off a season-opening win against Putnam Valley, visits defending CHSAA Division AA champion Iona Prep at 5:30 p.m. (Note the change in start time.)

Perennial Section 1 Class A contenders Mahopac and Suffern meet at 4:30 p.m. at Suffern Middle School.

In a NY upstate vs. downstate battle, Penn Yan visits Lakeland/Panas at 4:30 p.m. at Walter Panas High School.

In another Section 1 vs. CHSAA game, Harrison hosts Archbishop Stepinac at 4 p.m.

Among the New Jersey games on the schedule, Mountain Lakes visits Ramapo at 4:30 p.m.

Highlighting upstate New York action, nationally ranked Niskayuna starts its season with a game at Shenendehowa. Elsewhere, West Genesee hosts Fayetteville-Manlius and Liverpool plays at Baldwinsville.

    • sgt hulka says:

Early in the 4th, the score was 9-4.

In past seasons Coach Schurr has subbed liberally once they got a 4 or 5 goal lead.

Anybody know who played goalie for J.

  25. Indian J says:

There have been offensive problems with Jay since Sav was fired. There have been some nice wins, but those have always been close wins when compared to the Sav era, and most of those relatively low scoring. Sav’s teams would blow some teams literally out into the Atlantic Ocean. When I watch Jay”s O play, this year, vs. Town and last year vs. Town, I see essentially this: Some average to talented kids out there with one or two extremely talented kids, moving around trying to figure things out on their own. Sometimes they find something, sometimes they don’t.

Part of it is that Sav had an unprecedented amount of talent, and they do not possess an unprecedented amount of talent this season but….

They do have a fair amount of talent. You need to figure out who’s who and have more than just motion offense. if Motion is going to be your bread and butter all the time, then you have to teach the kids the tendencies of always aggressively moving and constantly reevaluating if you should be cutting, moving the ball, feeding or going to the cage. No Motion offense is totally improve, certain ideas are rehearsed and get used over and over again.

Jay always had that , but they used to love a few set plays that always worked. They’d run these Iso’s with three solid options for a shot. Maybe Town or Manhasset could force them to use the third option but then they would sometimes stick that too. Look at the scores from 04-09 and then 10-13. Again, many of those Jay kids went D1 and were noteworthy starters at those schools to boot- and that is a huge factor, but it just seems like some of that killer instinct is missing. Like I said, Sav would work them into a frenzy and it would work- even if the x’s and o’s were not so unbelievable .

Losing Branca from last season was huge.

Other than that, I don’t know what else they could do, other than just getting angry and start punishing the other team for showing it up. Its not like they’re rebuilding this year, they’ve got kids who can play.

    • Indian J says:

The only other thing is scouting. Scout every team you are going to play, watch film, and know that you’re going to be scouted by every team that you play. They’ll be watching film of you.

      • liptok93 says:

        Indian J

I completely agree with you in terms of scouting. This day in age, I really think its vital to scout HS games.

Every game Im at I see a Yorktown shirt with a video tape.

        • tom b says:

Indian J I totally agree about sav his set plays he ran were incredible and worked all the time. He ran a motion offense with inverts and lots of picking. Nolan runs nothing that makes the kids stagnint. Also Sav’s Brother was big into scouting and breaking down film which all the college guys do.

          • Indian J says:

I don’t want to blame any particular person or aspect because I’m sure that would be wrong.. I’m just answering a question about why I think things could be the way that they are. In regards to this season and the greely game in particular. ive noticed a trend, but I have no idea about administration, parents, the true depth of the the talent pool or how it all ties together. It seems to me as if something isn’t quite right and hasn’t been for a little while. They have had some success though and done some nice things. Don’t forget the manor in which Sav was let go etc…

    • N Rock says:

Its early to throw in the towel on JJ. They’ll be fine. As it relates to their goalie situation Christian Davey and/or Rob Looney will do a fine job. Tom Branca was the benefactor of a well run zone defense. So far JJ has been running a man to man defense and it has been exposing the goalies. They need to go back to playing zone and they’ll be fine.

      • Indian J says:

Nobody is throwing in the towel. That zone was fundamentally sound, but I’m not sure you can just switch back to it. Not sure Branca’s goal tending was just because of the zone either, he was pretty solid on clears and stopping more than a couple of would be transition goals too.

We were really focusing on the O.

        • N ROCK says:

I watched the replay on MSG last night and you can focus all you want on the offense but they need to focus on improving their defense and their face-offs. their face-offs were an embarrassment. Besides the first draw which was won bc Lambert kicked the ball and retrieved it I don’t think they won another faceoff. You cant give a team as good as YTown 20 extra possessions a game and expect to win. Add in all the turnovers JJ had during this game I’m surprised they didnt get beat by more.

One last thing everyone up in Lewisboro needs to stop crying about the good old days of the Sav’s they’ve been gone for years. Enough! The Sav’s didn’t invent lacrosse.

          • Indian J says:

Sav is just a point of reference, not saying he’s the archetypal coach. See my earlier post about draws. They were an embarrassment and not unrelated to being fired up, ground balls, confidence etc.
