The old adage that March goes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb should prove to be true weather-wise today as the forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 50’s in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tristate region.

The featured matchup, perhaps appropriately, will be at high noon as Chaminade, the consensus No. 2-ranked team nationally, visits defending New York Class A state champ West Islip.

Chaminade dealt WI its only loss in a 21-1 2012 season.

You can watch the game live at noon today on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum) and MSGVarsity.com/livecast. The game will air again later in the day at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday at 9 a.m. on MSGV Channel 14.

Over at Ward Melville, the Patriots welcome former Long Island great Frank Urso and his  Garnet Valley (Pa.) team at 12 p.m.. Urso, an All-American at Maryland, led the Terps to national titles in 1973 and ’75.

Ward Melville is coming off a 17-3 season-opening win over Riverhead in which Jack  Bruckner had three goals and three assists and Christian Mazzone four goals. Senior goalie Danny  Nemirov and senior defender Mike Zerbo had strong outings.

A week after beating Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) 6-5, defending New York Class B state champion Garden City has another major test against a national power when it hosts La Salle (Pa.) at 2 p.m.

Under the lights, Yorktown and John Jay meet once again in the first week of the regular season in the unofficial Section 1 regular-season game of the year. It’s the teams’ first meeting since Yorktown pulled out an overtime win against the Indians in last year’s Class B sectional final.

This year’s game is dedicated to the memory of the first All-American in John Jay history, John Cunniffe, who died in December after a brave battle with ALS. For the third straight year, all proceeds from the game will benefit ALS Research.

You can watch the game in the Westchester/Hudson Valley/Connecticut region on Wednesday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum) and on MSGVarsity.com.

The Yorktown-John Jay boys game is the second game of a doubleheader with the school’s girls teams, who begin the night’s action at 5 p.m.

Also in Section 1, Putnam Valley hopes to bounce back from a season-opening loss at Somers when it hosts a Dobbs Ferry team coming off a 14-win season at noon.

Arlington, fresh off its first-ever win over Lakeland/Panas, hosts Section 9’s Warwick at 11 a.m., and Pleasantville, which won its opener against Pelham, visits Nyack at 1 p.m.

After highly contested losses against Yorktown on Wednesday and John Jay on Thursday, Columbine (Colo.) concludes its East Coast trip by facing Fordham Prep today.

Also today, Section 9’s Minisink Valley visits Section 11’s Walt Whitman at noon.

Also today, Nassau County powers Manhasset and Syosset meet at 1 p.m. at the Syosset Woodbury Park on Jericho Turnpike.

In a prep showdown, Greenwich, Conn.-based Brunswick hosts Deerfield at 2 p.m. and Choate (Conn.) visits Lawrenceville (N.J.) at 4 p.m.

Also in the prep ranks, the Taft School (Conn.)  takes on Phillips Exeter in a 3:30 p.m. game at Harvard University that precedes the 7 p.m. game between Duke and Harvard.

There’s a big upstate clash today as Penfield plays at West Genesee.

If you want to see some good high school and college lax in one setting, head out to Rutgers University. New Jersey power Delbarton meets Trinity-Pawling (N.Y.) in a 4 p.m. scrimmage, followed by a 7 p.m. college game between Providence and host Rutgers and former Clarkstown South (N.Y.) High School goaltender Kris Alleyne, who was just named to the Big East Honor Roll.

Not the typical GC play with sloppy passes missed slides, poles losing Rambo Lasalles great attack kid. Lasalles goalie strong. GC had 2, 2 man up chances and gave ball away.

i was there. Yorktown was dominant and more consistent in just about every aspect of the contest. This was especially true on draws. JJ was terrible on draws. JJ also did not have it together on D, which when you combine that with losing all the draws, makes for some trouble. Town gained momentum, confidence, and played very inspired, tough lacrosse. Hats off to them. Jay, although I’m biased, isn’t as bad as the score would indicate, but will continue to have problems unless they fix the draws, figure out how to help their keeper and get a little hungrier. Town is better. Mariano is terrific. I do still believe however that Jay is better than that unfortunate effort having watched. Coaching was a factor too. Jays O was o.k., they look good and can move it around, but tonight, they were two dimensional ; waiting for a natural isolation to develop instead of using all six to gain that half step. But it was the the D that appeared to be somewhat complacent and not really working together as a cohesive unit. Also, I was surprised on how mush they let Yorktown do. Not slot of checking and aggressive sliding happening.

Don’t want to bash my team, Yorktown played great and deserves this. It was a great win for them and they looked like they could really be a contender in the state tonight. They were great.

      • slacrosse says:

Was there and generally agree with your assessment.

Maybe he did and I missed it but should have had Lambert take the FO which could have at least created some scrums and with help from the wings could have resulted in more J FO possession.

Prestreau, Vercruyuse. Mariano , Town’s poles among orhers , impressive.

    3. Jay – may have toughest schedule in section 1
    4. Somers – nice win vs. PV will be in mix all year
    5. Mamo – looking ahead play Bxville should be a good one
    6. Arlington – big win over L/P, another test Clarkstown south 4/4
    7. Mahopac – dropped a few spots tough loss against Northport
    8. Brewster – get things going next week

Watch list – Putnam Valley, Lakeland/Panas and White Plains

Braver man then me to rank at this early stage except for Town. I’m gonna wait until half way thru (riight after 4/13) to rank as this will give some notable teams time to have played other tough/competitive teams

Town: clearly #1 based on their games + deep talented players ( Hard to see how last yrs team with Gateley and Fusco didn’t keep it closer with albeit, a great Garden City team).
Jay: will have played Arlington and Brewster.
Bville: will have played Bridgewater Raritan ( NJ state champion last season) + Town.
LP: will have played couple more competitive teams- got better as last season progressed-play a very tough schedule inc Pen Yan and Loyola Blakefield ( lost to Garden City by 1) and Greenwich (could be best FCIAC team in CT)
Mamo: problem for ranking is soft schedule ( Fox could be an exception) until 4/24! Will need to dominate upcoming teams. 5 goal loss to Wantaugh may not be so bad vs a usually solid LI team ( also heard Mamo ahead at half + some key Mamo players were taken out hurt). Some credit for it being Mamo’s 1st game.
Somers: will have played a few more tough games.
Arlington: will have played J and Pac.
PAC: have some decent games coming up- give Pac some slack coming up against a traditionally very solid LI team in its 1st game- they will get better.
Rye: not a particularly tough schedule with a few exceptions inc. LP, New Canaan, Somers (later in sched)and from their League, Byram Hills and Fox Lane who always play Rye tough and sometimes win.
Brewster : several tough games coming up.
Hen HUD: Town Jay coming up.

  16. Laxfanlla99 says:

Yorktown Huskers were absolutley dominant vs JJ of all aspects of the game. Towns offense looked extremely impressive moving the ball as quick as they did. Towns long poles were extremely aggressive between the lines and created many turnovers that would quikly turn into goals for Town.

Hard faught game by both squads but after seeing this live, Town is far more superior than any section 1 team this far.
