LL_Game-Day-CROPPED16It’s the first stacked Saturday of the season, folks.

In some cases, the preseason.

First, let’s start with the big headline.

Garden City, the defending New York Class B state champions, has a huge test when it faces Maryland power Loyola-Blakefield in an 11 a.m. game at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Trojans, who started the season with an 8-4 win over Syosset this past Tuesday, are looking forward to the challenge.

The GC-LB game will be followed by a college doubleheader featuring Colgate and Navy at 2 p.m. and Virginia and Johns Hopkins at 4:30 p.m. (Both those games will be broadcast live on ESPNU.)

Another Nassau County squad, Cold Spring Harbor, has a big regular-season game today when it hosts Huntington at 7 p.m.

In another 7 p.m. game, Sachem East hosts Eastport/South Manor.

In a premier upstate clash, Pittsford plays at Orchard Park.

Now, to today’s flurry of preseason action.

Defending Connecticut Class M state champion Darien hosts a unique jamboree that is unlikely to be duplicated anywhere anytime soon.

Four defending state champs — Long Island powers West Islip and Shoreham-Wading and Connecticut Class L champ Fairfield Prep and the host Blue Wave — make up the field.

How impressive is that?

Two-time defending Section 1 Class B  champ Yorktown hosts defending Section 1 Class A champ Mamaroneck at 8:30 a.m. in a three-way scrimmage on the new turf at Charlie Murphy Field that also includes Hauppauge.

Two nationally ranked teams from New York — St. Anthony’s and Niskayuna — and New Jersey power Don Bosco Prep highlight the field at the fifth annual Somers Red/Gray Tournament, which also include sectional powers Lakeland/Panas, Mahopac and the host Tuskers.

Teams involved in the Mike Bruce Preaseason Tournament today include Wilton (Conn.), Mountain Lakes (N.J.) and host Bridgewater-Raritan (N.J.).

There will be a New York vs. New Jersey scrimmage at John Jay in Cross River when the Indians host Delbarton at 11 a.m.

Greenwich hosts a three-way scrimmage with Weston as well as defending Section 1 Class C champion Bronxville at 9 a.m. Connecticut Class L finalist Ridgefield and Manhasset meet in their annual scrimmage, and, in a 2:45 p.m. scrimmage, Fordham Prep hosts West Babylon.

Turning to girls action, national power St. Anthony’s and recent Duke commit Ella Bonafede start the season against Farmingdale.

Just touched down in Baltimore. Made real good time from the Island. It’s cold down here too! Will provides some GC LB updates as long as my fingers stay warm.

  3. Pequa says:

Thanks for the update Trojan Horse.

GC showing over-rated MD lax whats up!

  4. Trojan Horse says:

    6-3 GC at HT

  5. Copps Hill says:

For the 2nd straight year Ridgefield beats Manhasset in their annual scrimmage – this time the score was 9-5. Congrats Tigers!

    • Trojan Horse says:

GC wins 6-5! Never in doubt. Congrats fellas!!

    • Ha says:

Winning a scrimmage…..oy veh, get a clue man

      • SirLaxalot says:

Ha – you are the one that needs to get a clue. It’s not for you to tell anyone how to react to a scrimmage. That’s their choice. Not yours. Some players/coaches get excited after a great practice. What’s the difference? I notice this blog provides the listing of when big scrimmages are but not the scores. That’s the right way to report on them in my opinion, but fans are free to react however they want without anyone setting limits or mocking them.

  6. sec1 says:

    Ha Say,
Scrimmage you must not be here like I am, this was a hard fought game that goes on both Teams records. My opinion GC was the better Team, but LB is solid and the Goalie made some great stops.Justin G had a game.

  7. WestLax says:

    Update From Somers
Cold! Overview teams in order of best:
St. Anthony’s – moments looked like mid-season form. Poles are very active, runs 3 really good middies and the attack moves the ball well making opponents slide and get caught on weak side uncovered.
Nisky – Good all around team, liked the way they ran their offense productive. Did not see the late tilts (vs. St. Anthony’s @1:40)
Don Bosco – Opened up with Somers (real cold) amazed how fast this program grew. They will be ranked right up there against the Jersey best.
Somers – Best section 1 team there. #9 really good at Middie (hear Stony Brook recruit). Started slow against Bosco but came on at end. Somers will be heard in class B.
Mahopac – not surprised; well coached and some real good talent. They opened up against Clarkstown South and dominated start to finish. Their EMO featured a long pole who scored. #17 (LSM) all over field real aggressive always on the opponents hands. Will be in final 4 class A.
Kings Park – not upper tier of LI but would create havoc in section 1.
Guilderland, Clarkstown South, Fox Lane – good experience for all. With St A, Nisky and Bosco it will come in handy at the end of season.

    • Lax n stuff says:

Good recap. I’m still here. Getting a bit warmer but still windy as anything, which is affecting the shooting. St. A’s-Nisky was a hard played one. St. A’s scored a few more goals but the teams really battled. Impressed by St. A’s athletes and size. Nisky has a nice squad too.

  8. slacrosse says:

Looks like it’s Nisky again for the winner of Section 1!!

    • slacrosse says:

      Winner of Class A above

      • Boink says:

        Nisky is B

        • slacrosse says:

Confusing. Up until this season Laxpower had Nisky as Class A and it followed that last season they played Mamo, another Class A team in the states.

But now I see that they’re listed as Class B.

Only thing I can think of is their school population dropped putting them in B?

          • sgt hulka says:

I believe Nisky was in B as recently as 2010 as I recall they knocked out JJ that year. They were then bumped into A for ’11 & ’12.

  9. slacrosse says:

Went to Darien scrimmages . Saw D/SWR and for most part teams played fairly even during 1st half with starters playing. SWR goalie stood out to me as well as Darien’s goalie and attack kid,Linley(Mass) Seen him twice and he is a potent scorer that Yorktown will have to throttle when they play-good feede as well.

Same even play during the starters 1st half of D/WI game.

  10. Ride the Wave says:

Good points on Darien. It was good to see some of the underclassmen get good runs in the second halves of the scrimmages today. Many of them will develop into impact players this season.

  11. Hawk Hill says:

    CSH 4, Huntington 3 – 4 OT’s – classic game

  12. WestLax says:

    Top 10 Section 1 – Going into 1st week
    1. Yorktown – picked apart Iona looking forward to Jay game.
    2. John Jay – My good friend slacrosse says Yorktown will their have hands full
    3. Bronxville – have not heard much about but littered with D-1 talent
    4. Somers – I liked what a saw at Red/Gray scrimmage class B loaded at the top
    5. Mahopac – maybe 2nd best LSM in section 1 behind Lambert
    6. Mamaroneck – looked good against Rye in scrimmage defending class A champs
    7. Lakeland/Panas – good schedule have not seen much well see?
    8. Brewster – a lot of bloggers like so I will include top 10
    9. Rye – hard to say scrimmage Monday against Pac will tell more
    10. Hen Hud – really good young talent will be in the hunt all year

    • slacrosse says:

Yes definitely agree that Rye’s scrimmage vs Mahopac will be a lot more telling as to their early season form , that is importantly assuming they have back the 2-3 starters missing from the Mamo scrimmage.

  13. KingOne says:

Arlington with 3 D-1 commits and arguably best goalie in the section. No doubt top 10 team. Lost minimal impact players to last years semi finals squad.

  14. Lax Observer says:

Arlington looked like it would be a contender last year then faded down the stretch. They need to do it first before talking about it.

    • KingOne says:

I didn’t say they were gonna do anything other then should be a top 10 team preseason pick. They have gotten better every year over the past 3 years which was their goal. Who knows, they might struggle this year and go .500? Its a crazy game! Don’t forget this is a young program that has just started to make some headway the last 3 years. Last year they peaked 2 weeks too early and laid an egg in the semis and it was still an awesome season in their eyes. If they get 1 game farther this year then that is a success. Remember they won just 3 games 4 years ago. Nobody is declaring section A champs or anything. Don’t read more into a harmless comment. All I know is I am rooting for the younger programs this year in all classes. It was gd to see some new names last year in the semis and finals.

Laxit, I agree with you. The last 3 years will hopefully make this be their year because they lose a lot after this year and will be rebuilding next year for sure. Maybe 2 years?

      • slacrosse says:

Good luck to Arlington. Always nice to watch a developing program get stronger which sometimes yields uneven results from yr to yr but the important thing is to have a good coach and a solid youth program which I think Arlington has.

        • KingOne says:

Good start so far. I think the most encouraging thing about yesterdays win is Arlington can play a lot better as can LP. Signature win for the program regardless of what type of year Lp ends up having this year.

  15. In the mix says:

Agree with earlier post on Red/Grey. Somers offense was unselfish and everyone can shoot. Had some trouble on D, but looked like lack of experience. Face-offs were a problem. Tell you though they ride Very Very well.
Nisky and The Friars were a step above the field. Mahopac looked very well balanced on offense, goalie was decent and the LSM is a force.Lake/Panas had some serious offensive woes, but Jimmy L will right that ship. Thy were a good size on D and played very well together. Zingo in goal may be the best in the area. A bit windy all day , but a real nice day of lax.
Also just wanted to say Coach J at Somers does not get enough credit for things like this. It was very well run, organized and prepared. He seems like he is always trying to do something to help the lacrosse as well as charity communities all the time. Kudos!!
