Is this the year Chaminade unseats St. Anthony’s for the CHSAA title?

We’ll get a better idea when the teams clash for the first time during the regular season on April 10.

LL_Game-Day-CROPPED16But both squads have jumped out to 1-0 starts. St. Anthony’s downed Kellenberg 12-5 on Wednesday and Chaminade beat 2-12 Nassau County Class A finalist Massapequa 9-5 yesterday.

While the CHSAA has been front and center the last couple of days, following the traditional tristate lid-lifter on Tuesday between Nassau County public-school powers Garden City and Syosset (an 8-4 GC win), today is a big one for Suffolk County contenders

Smithtown West, a Section 11 Class A title contender once again, plays its opener with a home game against Syosset at 6 p.m.

Smithtown East, which could be a sleeper in Section 11, opens things up with a 4:30 p.m. home game of its own, against Rocky Point.

Also of note, Half Hollow Hills East host Plainedge at 4:15 p.m., Port Washington hosts South Side at 4:45 p.m. and Holy Trinity visits Seaford at 5 p.m.

Among the girls games scheduled,Ward Melville hosts Sayville and Garden City hosts Hewlett at 4:30 p.m. and Syosset visits Friends Academy at 4:45 p.m.

Taking a quick look ahead to tomorrow, it will be the first stacked Saturday of the new season with a marquee matchup between defending New York Class A state champion Garden City and national power Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) at 11 a.m. at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, prior to the start of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic.

In addition, it will be a LI vs. CT lineup of four defending state championship teams at the Darien Jamboree and nationally ranked St. Anthony’s and Niskayuna and New Jersey power Don Bosco Prep are among the teams that will be participating in the fifth annual Red/Gray Preseason Classic at Somers High School in Northern Westchester County in New York’s Hudson Valley.
