It may have only been Game 1, but defending New York Class B state champion Garden City looked like it was in championship form yesterday in an 8-4 win over Syosset in the traditional marquee season-starter for tristate lax.

LL_Game-Day-CROPPED16It was the fifth straight year the two teams have met in the season opener and sixth straight year GC has opened the season vs. Syosset.

Justin Guterding, who earlier this week was ranked among the nation’s Top 25 players regardless of class, and Lucas Clay each had three goals and one assist for GC. Brian Badgett had three assists. Hopkins-bound goalie Ryan Feit of Syosset had 16 saves.

Today, we will see if another defending champ brings its “A” game in Game 1.

We’re talking about four-time CHSAA Division AAA champ St. Anthony’s, which starts its regular season with a home game against Kellenberg Memorial.

Also of note today, Cold Spring Harbor plays at South Side (Skelos Field) and Holy Trinity visits Farmingdale at 4:30 p.m.

In an interesting scrimmage between tristate powers, Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) hosts Yorktown (N.Y.).

Also of note, CHSAA Division AA finalist Fordham Prep visits two-time New York Class C state semifinalist Bronxville in another scrimmage.

In girls lacrosse, nationally ranked Manhasset (N.Y.) opens the season against Port Washington.
