Greenwich wrapped up a 9-9 season with a 15-5 loss to eventual Connecticut Class L state champion Fairfield Prep in the first round of the CIAC tournament.
For a team whose roster was made up of many underclassmen, the Cardinals’ 2012 finish may actually prove to be the start of something big.
After all, those players now have attribute that they entered last season lacking — varsity experience.
Some of them, in fact, are now upperclassmen.
Case in point, Jack Harrington.
The 6-foot-3, 208-pound close defenseman, who has verbally committed to Duke, is now a junior. He is a physical player with ideal size and outstanding footwork, as evidenced by his highlight reel.
Harrington and the Cardinals will be scrimmaging Weston at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 23.
Now, here are Jack’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
We started in the fall playing in some fall-ball tournaments and most of our team has been playing all winter in the Sunday league at Chelsea Piers (in Stamford, Conn.).
The full-field competition has been extremely high this year with games against Fairfield Prep and Brunswick. There are also groups of us who do sprint work after school and lift.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule is very competitive. All of our non-FCIAC games are challenging and will really test how far we’ve developed as a team. The best games will be our home games against Darien and Fairfield Prep as well as our away games against Chaminade and Lakeland/Panas.
The scrimmage we are looking forward to most is Brunswick on March 26. They are a big crosstown rival and it should be fun. We follow that scrimmage with a trip down to Manhasset the following day so our scrimmage schedule is as tough as it gets.
What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Overall, our entire team will surprise a lot of people. Since we had virtually no seniors last year, the look and feel of our team will be much bigger and faster.
Jack Nail will be a very strong defender. He has good feet and is an aggressive player. Also, Ryan Flippin will be a big offensive contributor at the midfield. He has great speed and a tremendous lacrosse IQ.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Our biggest strength will be our experience. Our team will be returning every starter, except for our goalie. We are getting used to playing together, and as we mature, we will be a contender in both the FCIAC and states.
