Two-time New York State Class C semifinalist Bronxville has a record.
Junior attackman Matt Behrens’ verbal commitment to Georgetown University, which was first reported on Twitter.com/joe_lombardi, gives the Broncos five Division I-bound players.
Behrens, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound lefty, is an effective feeder/finisher with a strong shot, good field vision and the ability to use either hand.
Behrens joins fellow D-I commits Jack Grass (senior attackman, Johns Hopkins), Brewster Warble (senior midfielder, Brown), Will Duncan (junior midfielder, Providence) and Henry Grass (sophomore attackman, Johns Hopkins).
In addition, he is the fourth player from the Prime Time travel team in the last four years to commit to Georgetown, joining former Bronxville standout Charlie McCormick (Class of 2011) as well as Mamaroneck (N.Y.) senior Peter Conley and Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) sophomore Riley O’Sullivan.
PT Director Nick Daniello said Behrens “has tremendous vision and has the ability to stretch a defense with his outside shot. He is extremely dedicated player with a very high lax IQ. “
Now, here’s a Q&A with Matt on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
A combination of outstanding academics, lacrosse and the coaching staff.
The chance to play for (Georgetown) Head Coach Kevin Warne, Assistant Coach Matt Rewkowski and Assistant Coach Brian Phipps is very exciting. They have a high energy program and I could see myself really fitting in there.
Additionally, Washington, D.C., is an exciting place to go to school.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited and considered Dartmouth, Brown, Marquette, Amherst and Middlebury.
What are your main strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
The ability to use both hands, my field vision and the ability to get others involved. I also have a strong shot and ride hard.
Who introduced you to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I started playing in the Bronxville Youth League in the fifth grade. Coach Danny James and Coach Tony Borcich introduced me and my friends to the game, taught us great fundamentals and made playing a lot of fun.
I grew up playing a number of sports, including basketball and baseball, but over the last couple of years focused on lacrosse.
Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
Coach Tim Horgan has built a top-notch lacrosse program at Bronxville and has worked hard to schedule some of the best teams in the area, which had raised everyone’s game on the team. He continues to push me as a player and was very helpful in the recruiting process.
Prime Time Director Nick Daniello has been very involved in my development from the beginning and had proved great guidance both on and off the the field and was always there to make connections. My Prime Time 2014 team has been a great experience playing with talented kids and going to great tournaments.
I’ve also been able to play on Ken Miller’s Long Island Sting team and was able to broaden my tournament exposure and get strong recruiting advise.
All my coaches have been supportive and provided me with invaluable guidance over the years.
What wonderful news. Best to you Matt!
