The race for the top spot in Suffolk County Class A is attracting a lot of discussion — and votes in our latest poll.
One team that is always in the hunt but has lacked some preseason buzz in 2013 is Sachem North.
For more on the Flaming Arrows, we turn to Mike Calvagna.
The junior faceoff specialist has verbally committed to Stony Brook University.
Now, here are Mike’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
In our program, the Sachem North varsity team has played in several summer and fall tournaments. We also played in a fall league at Farmingdale State.
When winter started, we went indoors for our practices and clinics. As an individual I continue with my speed, agility and strength training multiple times a week.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Playing in arguably the toughest league in the country, Suffolk County Division 1, there are no easy games.
Right now, I am looking forward to our first game and getting the season under way.
As we did last year, we are traveling down to Archbishop Spalding in Maryland. We also have scrimmages at Massapequa and Darien, which should be exciting.
What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Graduating 15 seniors last year, there will be quite a few players stepping into larger roles.
That being said, I see Matt Battelli, Joe Caridi and Shane Deboer being major contributors on the offensive end.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
This year, I think on the defensive side with Stony Brook-bound Tyler Andreassi and Penn State-bound Michael Aronow, we will be able to stack up with the best of them.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be.
Like every year, the race will be a tough one. We expect to be contending for the Suffolk County championship.
When you look at Division 1, you have to talk about West Islip, Ward Melville and Smithtown West.
This year, I also expect Northport and Smithtown East to also be contenders.
