The Bernards High School Mountaineers are hoping to continue their climb.

After back-to-back losing seasons in 2009 and ’10, the Mountains have made some noise in New Jersey Group 1 the last two years, winning 14 games each season.

Can the Mountaineers reach new heights in 2013?

For a look, we turn to senior Griffin Connor, an athletic, left-handed midfielder who is headed to Marquette University.

Now, here are Griffin’s perspectives on the upcoming season.11-300x150

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I’m in basketball season right now, but during the fall, I worked a lot on my stick skills and getting stronger in the weight room. Basketball is still helpful for lacrosse because I know I’ll come into the spring in great shape.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule is very good this year. We move up into a new division with some very competitive teams. All of those division games will be good tests.

Some other regular-season games I’m looking forward to are Chatham, Mountain Lakes and Somerville.

What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Robert Schauffler, our junior attackman, could turn a lot of heads this year. He has the best stick skills on the team. We also have a lot of talent in the sophomore class, and those guys will get to see the field a lot this year.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I believe our strengths lie in our athleticism. We have the ability to play fast and push it in transition. We want to dictate the pace of our games this year.

Another strength will be having possession a lot of the time. It’s a huge help that we have a great faceoff guy in Jon Diamond (a senior headed to the University of Vermont).
