It all starts in exactly two months.

That’s when the Yorktown Huskers open the 2013 season.

They’ll do it in nearby West Point in New York’s Hudson Valley when they host Columbine High School (Colo.) on March 27 at 11 a.m.

Just three days later, on March 30, it’s the annual showdown against John Jay (March 30 at 7 p.m. at John Jay) in the unofficial Section 1 regular-season game of the year.

As if that’s not enough, Yorktown plays its first game on its new turf field on April 2 against Putnam Valley.

So, as you can imagine, the Huskers are busy preparing for the start of official practice on March 11.

For more, we check in senior defenseman Trevor Koelsch.

Koelsch will be moving on to Johns Hopkins University. But these days, he’s focused on helping Yorktown win what would be its 36th sectional title.

Now, here are Trevor’s perspectives on the upcoming season.11-300x150

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
Last year, my main focus during the offseason was getting stronger. This year, I’m working out but also focusing a lot more on footwork drills (dot drill, jumping rope and different cone drills). Also, last fall, our team played at the Rutgers and Shoreham tournaments.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
As always, we are playing a challenging schedule with many high-powered teams from out of our section such as Chaminade and St. Anthony’s.

Of course, I am looking forward to our usual big time games against rivals like Lakeland/Panas and John Jay. Games like those are always highly anticipated and very competitive.

Another game I am looking forward to this year is against Columbine High School. It will be an interesting experience for both teams to see how the West stacks up against the East.

Scrimmage-wise, we will be playing against Don Bosco, Iona Prep, Mamaroneck and Hauppauge.

What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
After losing so many seniors last year, a lot of new players will have to step up, but I am confident people will.

At long pole, junior Tomas Rodriguez will be big for us this this year after putting a lot of time into the weight room during the off season.

Another surprise will be junior goalie Austin Graham, who worked hard in the fall taking shots.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Defense will be our team’s main strength this upcoming season with three experienced defensemen, but I feel we will have threats all over the field.

On attack, Nick Mariano’s speed will complement Connor Vercruysse’s shooting ability to make a deadly combination.

At the faceoff X, senior Danny Manning and junior Luke Palmadesso will give us a huge advantage.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
It will be a tough race as always with powerhouses such as John Jay and Garden City in the way. It should be a great season.
