The start of the 2013 varsity season is getting closer and closer, and for the John Jay Indians, the opening month of March will go out like a Lion indeed.

After hosting a talented team from Columbine (Colo.), the Indians and archrival Yorktown squad off in the annual regular-season game of the year in New York’s Section 1 on Saturday, March 30 at John Jay.

Such a challenging Week 1 means every day during this offseason is precious for John Jay.

Just ask Brandon Lee.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound attackman, who has been accepted to Bowdoin College, is a righty with exceptional stick skills.

Now, here’s are Brandon’s perspectives on the 2013 season.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I’ve been working out everyday at the track, on the field and in the weight room with my teammates to get us ready for the season.  We’ve also had several team practices already this fall.

As a team, we went down to the Shoreham-Wading River Tournament.  This winter we are playing in an indoor league to keep our sticks sharp.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
We’re scrimmaging Darien, Delbarton and Fairfield Prep — all great competition.  As always, we’re looking forward to our games against Yorktown and Somers.  We’re excited to see non-section teams like Manhasset, Ridgefield, New Canaan and Columbine (all the way from Colorado) on the schedule as well.

What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I think Shawn Smith (junior midfield), Andrew Duffy (senior midfield) and Matt Lanza (junior defense) will surprise people this season and they should play a big part for us.  I also think my younger brother, Ryan Lee (sophomore attack), will turn some heads.

What do you think the strength of your team will be?
I think that our strength this year will be in our defense.  We are returning several defensemen with a lot of varsity experience.  They’ve become a cohesive unit and they play well together.  We have some good depth at midfield as well.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
There’s a lot of great competition in our section.  Some teams that are always in the mix are Yorktown, Somers and Rye.
