New Canaan High School (Conn.) has handed the keys to its varsity boys lacrosse program to one of its own.
Chip Buzzeo, a 1996 New Canaan graduate who went on to play at Princeton University, has been named the Rams’ new head coach. Buzzeo takes over for Alex Whitten, who led NCHS to the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title this past spring. Whitten announced in late October that he was leaving New Canaan to take over as head varsity coach at Western Albermarle High School in Crozet, Va.
Buzzeo was a captain of Princeton’s “Team of the Decade” in 2001. The Tigers downed Syracuse to win the national title — their sixth in a 10-year span.
That season, Buzzeo was recipient of the Scott Klurfield Memorial Award, awarded to the Princeton player who best showcases “perseverance, hard work, team spirit and dedication to lacrosse and to Princeton.”
Buzzeo, who was also a hockey standout at NCHS, had a post-grad year at Avon Old Farms before enrolling at Princeton.
Buzzeo has been involved with lacrosse in the New Canaan community as a coach and board member of the New Canaan Lacrosse Association.
Whitten, the son of Wilton (Conn.) founding coach Guy Whitten, went 57-23 in five seasons as New Canaan’s head coach. He succeeded the legendary Howard Benedict, who coached New Canaan for 34 seaso

Good to see another former standout from the FCIAC – i.e. Wiseman, Bulkley – coming back to coach.
Playing under Bill Tierney at Princeton with the complexities of their practice and scouting schemes will undoubtedly give him a leg up on other HS varsity coaches.
I’d say the same but with and under Howard Benedict
Ironic that he played under Benedict and replaces Alex Whitten the son of Guy Whitten. Benedict and Whitten undoubtedly are the founding fathers of FCIAC lacrosse.
A. Whitten should have stayed in Wilton or Weston …. trying to bring a Whitten into NC was a bad idea … agree about the founding fathers, although J. Brameier could/should probably be a part of that group too, even though he got a later start
