Greenwich (Conn.) coach Scott Bulkley describes Decker Curran as one of the most athletic attackmen he’s coached.

“Decker has a tremendous shot both spotting up and on the run,” Bulkley said. “He is a tenacious rider and creates scoring situations with his consistent hustle. I love how hard he plays.”

Bulkley will get to admire those attributes, which are also on display in Curran’s highlight reel, for the next three varsity seasons.

After that, the 6-foot-2, 165-pound righty will take his talents to one of the newest programs at the Division I level.

“Michigan just got themselves a very good lacrosse player and quality young man,” Bulkley said.

The sophomore standout’s verbal commitment to the upstart Wolverines was first reported on Sunday at Twitter.com/joe_lombardi.

Curran’s choice commitment comes almost a year to the day after another GHS sophomore, defenseman Jack Harrington, who is now a junior, committed to Duke.

As you will soon learn, Curran’s abilities on the field (and on the ice – he’s also a hockey standout for the Cardinals) are enhanced by a competitive  streak that’s a byproduct of being part of a family rich in athletic success.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Decker on his commitment.recruiting_update

What were the main factors in your decision?
Many factors influenced my decision to commit to Michigan.

I have always dreamed of playing D-I lacrosse and winning a national championship. I knew I was interested in a larger school that has lots of school spirit. I wanted a school with a good academic reputation as well as a strong athletic program.  Michigan has it all.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Villanova, Penn State, Bucknell and Michigan. I spoke to some others, but the discussions didn’t really develop.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Very aggressive and offensive. I am competitive and try to keep up the intensity, even in practice. I love being part of a team.

What areas of your game have you been working to improve on?
I try to improve my game any way I can, even if it’s just having a pass with a friends or going to shoot on an open net.

I’ve been working on my two man game, getting other players involved, picks and cuts. I am always trying to work on my movement off the ball.

You are from an athletic family. Can you talk a bit about that and who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
My entire family is athletic and very competitive. Both my parents played college sports. My dad played soccer and lacrosse, my mom played D-I field hockey and lacrosse.  My stepfather (Dave Maloney) was in the NHL for 10 years and played for the New York Rangers.

They have all been influences in my development as a player.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in last summer?
I played for the CT Chargers for two years, and then my varsity coach, Scott Bulkley, moved to Chelsea Piers (in Stamford, Conn.) to run their program, and I followed him to the CPCT lax team.

I went to Maverick Showtime last summer and had a blast. Looking forward to this summer.

With his size as a soph, shot and stick skills sounds like Michigan hit the lottery.
