Denver is a long way from New Jersey.

But when Josh Haubenstock visited the University of Denver, the sophomore midfielder from Ramapo High School felt right at home.

That was the main reason the 5-foot-10, 160-pound righty gave a verbal commitment yesterday to coach Bill Tierney’s Pioneers, as first reported at Twitter.com/joe_lombardi.

Haubenstock, was a key contributor on Ramapo’s varsity squad as a freshman this past spring before enjoying a strong summer with the Leading Edge Elite travel team. He is an offensive-oriented, athletic playmaker, attributes on display in his highlight reel.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Josh on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factor in my decision was where I felt the most comfortable.

I visited a lot of schools and was able to get a strong feeling for what I wanted in a lacrosse program as well as a college. At Denver, the team is very close and there is a family atmosphere, which I really liked.

I also wanted a place where I could get a good education and be able to get a job after college through connections in the lacrosse program.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Other than Denver, I visited Maryland, Georgetown, Fairfield, Lafayette, Harvard, Yale and Navy.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I think my ability to separate is my greatest strength and I would describe my style of play as geared toward the offensive end of the field.

What areas of your game have you been working to improve on?
I’ve always been trying to improve defense and my time-and-room shot — both lefty and righty. However, there is room for improvement in all aspects of my game.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
I would say the biggest influence on me as a player came from my freshman year when I played varsity. The high level of competition really helped me get better.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in last summer?
Last summer, I played on Leading Edge. I really didn’t go to any big showcases; I got all of my exposure from the tournaments that my club team attended.

Wow – a sophomore commit. A couple of years ago it was shocking, now it’s almost reassuring that it’s not a freshman or even – who knows – someone younger. Good to see some of the older guys who verbal also get some attention lol
