It started in October, 2010 when goalie Ryan Feit, then a goaltender at Syosset High School on Long Island, verbally committed to Johns Hopkins.

That commitment, first reported by LaxLessons.com, started a national trend.

Now a senior, Feit’s verbal becomes official during National Letter of Intent Fall Signing Week. Feit told LaxLessons.com in a story published last week that, for him, making one of the best decisions of his life at such a young age was the right call for him.

But now, with so many sophomores making the decision earlier, the trend is becoming more and more controversial. And more scrutinized.

The latest media outlet to focus on it is the Baltimore Sun.

In a story (shown above) with the headline, “Despite reservations, college lacrosse coaches recruit younger and younger players,” the Sun takes an in-depth look at the accelerated recruiting pace.

The Baltimore Sun article basically recaps what those of us who have been following this trend starting with news of Feit’s commitment in 2010 on Laxlessons. But still interesting to read some of the quotations in the story.

Never would have thought when Syosset’s Ryan Feit started all this in 2010 that soph commits would be the norm and not the exceptionm.
