If you’re looking for a high school player who perfectly fits the description of a shutdown defender, look no further than Joe Serrecchia.

Serrecchia, a junior longstick midfielder/defenseman at Brewster High School (N.Y.) who starred for the Prime Time travel program over the summer, verbally committed earlier this week to Hofstra University.

“Joe has the ability to shut down a team’s top midfielder or attackman,” Prime Time Director Nick Daniello said. “He is a very hard-nosed player who throws good checks and can push the ball in transition. Hofstra has landed a very talented defender.”

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Serrecchia is also a standout on the unbeaten Brewster football team.

In lacrosse, he is also effective at getting ground balls and creating transition opportunities, as evidenced by his highlight film.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Joe on his commitment.recruiting_update

What were the main factors in your decision?
The academics at Hofstra are outstanding and provide many options and opportunities for what I can accomplish in the future. Hofstra is also a very traditional lacrosse school which can compete with the best lacrosse schools in the country. Also (Head) Coach (Seth) Tierney, (Assistant) Coach (J.P.) Brazel and (Assistant) Coach (Kevin) Unterstein made me feel right at home at the university when I visited.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Towards the end of the process I had considered Drexel, UMass, Providence and Marquette. I had visited Drexel.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I have always believed that my greatest strengths as a player are my athleticism, footwork and my vision on the field. Being able to see a play developed and react quickly is a huge advantage. I would describe my style of play as extremely aggressive and fast. I love to get up and down the field and contribute defensively as well as creating offense by running the fast-break.

How has playing football complementing playing lacrosse, and what are your thoughts on Brewster’s season so far?
Playing football has had a huge influence on my aggressive style of play and has also contributed to my communication with my teammates. Along with that communication, football has taught me a lot about teamwork throughout the years. As for the season, we are having a great one and we all look forward to the playoffs.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
My biggest influences in lacrosse have to be my varsity coaches (Mike) Honey, (Chris) Sica and (Rich) DaRos, along with Nick Daniello and (former Brewster standout and University at Albany freshman defenseman) Harry Erickson.

Coach Honey and Coach DaRos have been there every step of the way since I first stepped onto a lacrosse field and along with Coach Sica will be with me for the rest of my high school career.

Nick Daniello has guided and advised me throughout the entire recruiting process. Also, Harry Erickson has given me advice on virtually every part of my game.

What were some of the big showcase events you participated in this past summer?
I participated in the Maverik Lacrosse Showcase as well as the Moonlight Showcase individually. I attended Battle of the Hotbeds and King of the Hill with my travel team, Prime Time.
