Bernards boys lacrosse is on the rise.

After back-to-back losing seasons in 2009 and 10, the Mountaineers, who compete in Group 1 in New Jersey, have won 14 games each of the last two seasons.

For Bernards, the best may be yet to come.

As reported yesterday at Twitter.com/joe_lombardi, two Mountaineer senior midfielders have committed to D-I programs: Griffin Connor (Marquette) and Jon Diamond (Vermont).

We’ll be hearing from both of them. We start with Connor, a 6-foot, 170-pound athletic lefty who is a strong dodger, as evidenced by his highlight film.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Griffin on his commitment. recruiting_update

What were the main factors in your decision?
I was looking for a school that provided both excellent academics and athletics, and Marquette was just that. (Marquette Head) Coach (Joe) Amplo and his staff were very high energy, and I loved what I saw while visiting.

The school’s commitment to the lacrosse program showed me that they were very serious about getting good, fast.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered many other schools during my recruiting process: Hobart, Air Force, Holy Cross, Rutgers, St. Johns, Vermont and Amherst. I made my visits to Hobart and Holy Cross.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I think my strengths are dodging and playing between the lines, and I would describe my style of play as athletic.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
I would say my biggest influence as a player is my good friend Andrew Staller, who plays at UPenn right now. He’s a middie as well and we’ve worked out together a lot during the off seasons, he’s helped me with a lot with my game and work ethic.

What travel team did you play on this past summer and what were some of the showcase events you competed in?
I played with my Bernards team in a few tournaments this summer, which was a lot of fun and great to get chemistry going during the summer. I also played two tournaments, Champ Camp and Syracuse Shootout, with Team Turnpike this summer.
