Court Whitney looks at a save as more than preventing a goal from being scored.

The senior goaltender at New Jerse powerhouse Mountain Lakes is always looking to turn a save into a transition opportunity.

Whitney’s strong play inside and outside of the cage put him on the radar of many college programs.

Ultimately, the 6-foot right-hander decided to play at the next level at the soon-to-launch Division I program at Boston University.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Court on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision?
When I visited BU, I loved it. I knew going into my visit that it was definitely the elite academic institution that I was looking for. When I got there, the location was unbeatable. Being 10 minutes (walking distance) out of Boston was definitely a perk.

But more than anything, in my discussion with (BU Head) Coach (Ryan) Polley, it really seemed like he was well on his way to structuring what could be a very successful team in the next few years. I wanted to be a part of it, and BU offered the full package. I can’t wait to get there.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Going into my recruiting process, I was really focused on trying to play D-III lacrosse. I felt that it was the best fit for me and how I wanted to spend my time in college.

But over the course of the past year, I started to show more interest in playing D-I. I had regular communication with and considered schools such as Dickinson, Ursinus, Franklin & Marshall, Roanoke and Western New England College. In addition to those D-III’s,  Michigan, Yale, and obviously BU, were among those as well.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I don’t really have a specific area in the cage that I’m much better at than others. I try to play a complete game all the time.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and do you play any other sports?
My dad played lacrosse at Yale, so he introduced it to me at a very young age. I started playing lacrosse in 2nd grade, as well as football.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and do you play any other sports?
There are a few people that had a major influence. Obviously, my parents made a huge contribution. They always pushed me and motivated me as a student and an athlete.

Among my parents, my goalie coach Steve Feltmann and my (Mountain Lakes) head coach Tim Flynn were major influences as well. Coach Feltmann helped me with my game specific to Goalie since I was a freshman.

Coach Flynn taught me a lot about the intangibles of lacrosse, including the attitude to work hard and strive to be better everyday.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in this past summer?
I played for my high school summer ball team, Laker Future. I attended events such as UPlax, MVP tournament, Bay Bridge Brawl, Whiz Kids (All-star selection) and Peak 200.
