In an age of specialization in sports, the way college lacrosse coaches see it, an athlete who can excel in several sports has a big advantage on the lacrosse field.

Meet Timothy Covel.

A decorated standout in football and lacrosse at Cheshire High School (Conn.), Covel’s future at the next level is in lacrosse.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound rangy defenseman/longstick midfielder has verbally committed to Connecticut College after considering a variety of Division I and III programs.

Covel did not first start playing lacrosse until age 15.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Timothy on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
I wanted to go to school that was great academically and had good solid lacrosse.  Connecticut College fits that criteria perfectly.  Also, the NESCAC is tremendous conference and most of the games are not too far from my home so my family can see me play.  I could also watch a few of my brothers games as they grow up.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered Middlebury, Ohio Wesleyan, Mount St Marys, Sacred Heart, Lafayette and Boston University.  I visited UMass, Sacred Heart, Holy Cross, Mount St Marys, and Connecticut College

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?recruiting_update
My strengths as a player would have to be my ability to push transition, my communication and my positioning. I would describe myself as aggressive and I am always looking to push the ball up the field and make as many plays as I can.

What areas of your game have you been working to improve on?
I have been working on the takeaway abilities and my shooting, both on the run and set shots.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
I didn’t start playing lacrosse until I got to high school when Coach (Rich) Pulisciano (also my football coach) convinced me to play.  He along with my defensive coach Jon Knowles literally taught me the game of lacrosse.  I was clueless, so those would have to be by biggest influences by far.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in this summer?
I played on the Connecticut Hurricanes this summer.  The biggest showcases I attended were CT Super Junior, and King
of the Hill and the Gait Cup, the last two I attended with the Hurricanes.

Saw this kid play a couple of times- think he should have chosen D1- heard great things about his work ethic and attitude. ConnCollege got lucky with this kid.
