When it comes to standing your ground in goal, size matters.

Case in point, John Quinn.

The Sachem North rising senior stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 195 pounds.

“I take up much of the cage and I am able to control all aspects of the defense,” he said.

Quinn’s college desitination is West Point. He verballed to coach Joe Alberici’s Black Knights last week.

Now, here’s a Q & A with John on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
West Point is an outstanding school with a powerful D-I lacrosse program. Also, my father has served in the U.S. Army for 27 years, so I grew up around military life and I know I will fit right in.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I have visited Lehigh University, Boston University, Lafayette College, Salisbury University and Vassar College. I also considered Furman University and Tufts University.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I feel as a player I take up most of the cage. I stand 6-foot-1, but I am still quick on my feet. My wrestling background has enabled me to go down for low shots and quickly recover.

What areas of your game have you been working to improve on?
The largest area of improvement that I’ve focused on is my clearing game. My (Sachem North) coach (Jay Mauro), has really got on me about my clears and I put in the extra time needed to make the difference.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
Our assistant coach at Sachem North, Rich Petillo, really helped me out, especially during the years of youth league where goalies develop basic skills necessary for further improvement. I have memories of myself, Coach Petillo and his oldest son Bryan, also a goalie, running drills in the hallways of Sachem North. Also, my parents have supported me throughout my career. They’ve put up with the stress that the sport brings and continued to push me because they knew it would all work out.

Lastly, of course, Coach Mauro. He was the one who gave me the opportunity to prove myself on the field last season during our playoffs. He has been a constant support during this difficult recruiting process. He was always available to offer his advice. I am grateful for all of the time he has put into our program.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in this summer?
My high school lacrosse program runs a summer travel team. As a team, Sachem North played at Lehigh Lax Fest, Hofstra Long Island Lax Fest, where I was chosen to play in the all-star game.
