New York City outlasted Hudson Valley to win the gold medal of the inaugural Empire State Cup in Syracuse today.

The gold medal of the inaugural Empire State Cup was won by New York City.
NYC held off Hudson Valley 10-8 to wrap up the four-day event played at Central Square outside Syracuse.
Mike Rastivo earned tournament MVP honors, scoring three goals and adding an assist for NYC, which led 3-1 after the first quarter, 6-3 at halftime and 9-6 after three.
John Yozzo-Scaperrotta scored two of HV’s last three goals, including a goal that pulled HV within 9-8 with time winding down.
Western beat Long Island7-6 in overtime on a goal by Connor Fields to win the bronze medal.
Central downed Adirondack 14-6 in the fifth-place game to start the day’s action.

SUNDAY, JULY 29 GAME RECAPS
-New York City 10, Hudson Valley 8: In the gold-medal game, NYC was able to take down previously undefeated Hudson Valley. The game was tied 3-3 in the first half, but New York City pulled away with four straight goals and never relinquished the lead. Hudson Valley was able to rally three straight goals to cut the score to 8-6, and later 9-8, but a New York City goal in the final minutes cemented the win. Michael Rastivo (three goals, one assist) and Dylan Molloy (three goals) led New York City in scoring. James Coughlan (one goal, two assists), Gregory Pietroforte (one goal), John Uppgren (one goal) and Colin Woolford (one goal) chipped in on offense. Dylan Moser (five saves) and Daniel Katzman (four saves) split time in between the pipes. John Yozzo-Scaperrotta (three goals) and Alex Corpolongo (two goals, one assist) led Hudson Valley in scoring. Kevin McDermott, Brian Prestreau and Christopher Santangelo added singles; Brian Prunty had one helper. Michael Zingaro (four saves) and James Danaher (two saves) saw time in goal for Hudson Valley. Danny Manning and Luke Palmadesso combined to win 12 of 15 faceoffs.
Western 7, Long Island 6: Connor Fields scored the game-winning goal in overtime, lifting Western past Long Island, 7-6, to secure the bronze medal. Western led 5-0 before LI scored four straight goals to cut the lead to 5-4. John Januszkiewicz buried a goal to stop the bleeding, but Long Island erased the two-goal deficit late in the fourth quarter, with Christian Trasolini tying the game on a transition goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation. However, Fields’ heroics ensured Long Island could not complete the furious comeback. Austin Goltz (three goals, one assist) led Western in scoring. Januszkiewicz (one goal, two assists), Connor Fields (one goal), James May (one goal), Tomothy Wagner (one goal), Austin Bishop (one assist) and Daniel LaCrosse (one assist) rounded out the Western scoring. Taylor Ferrino (eight saves) and Kyle Lake (three saves) each saw time in goal. Eric Gennari (one goal, two assists) and Matthew Heldberg (two goals) led Long Island in scoring, while Patrick O’Brien, Christian Trasolini and Mario Vezza each chipped in singles. Anthony Delosreyes (seven saves) and David Hwang (one save) both saw time in Long Island’s goal.
Central 14, Adirondack 6: Gale Thorpe set tournament records in goals, assists and points, with a si- goal, five-assist performance, to lead Central to the win over Adirondack in the fifth-place game. The game was tight early, but Central pulled away with a dominating second-half effort. Adirondack held a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, and the score was tied 6-6 at the half. Ryan Wright (three goals, one assist), Connor O’Hara (two goals, one assist), Ronnie Bertrand (two goals), Paul Bracy (one goal), Colin Stone (one goal), Jeffrey Edwards (two assists) and Kevin Lux (one assist) rounded out the scoring for Central. Jacob Wood made 12 saves in the win. Cody Dyer led Adirondack with two goals and one assist, while Dillon Flood, Bradley Johnston, Troy Miller and Anthony Zabielski added single goals. Brenden Deady (six saves) and Zachary Anderson (five saves) split time in goal.

Interesting concept for this event but I think in the future, if it returns, they do need to make players be residents of the regions they represent. I don’t see the point of having a team called NYC win led by players from Ward Melville and Wantagh.

Also with Empire State Games coming back next season doubtful “Cup” will be back.
