Jack Phelan has good size, speed, stick skills and a very high lacrosse IQ.

So it should come as no surprise that the 6-foot-3, 190-pound rising senior is the latest Yorktown defensive standout to decide on continuing his lacrosse career at Rutgers.

Eric Cooley, a 2012 YHS grad, will be a freshman at Rutgers this fall.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Jack on his commitment:recruiting_update

What were the main factors in your decision?
I chose Rutgers for its great business school and Big East lacrosse program. I look forward to playing for Coach (Brian) Brecht and joining my teammate, Eric Cooley.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Besides Rutgers, I visited Dartmouth, Hobart, Siena and Holy Cross. I also considered Amherst and Marquette. I would like to thank those coaches for their interest in me.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I am a leader on the field and I have good size and speed. I like to play aggressively and I am a groundball machine.

What areas of your game have you been working to improve on?
I will work to get faster and stronger in order to dominate at my position.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
The YAC Lacrosse Program gave me my start in lacrosse. My first coaches, Mike Nolan and Vin D’Andraia, taught me how to play defense. I would like to thank Paul Carcaterra for inviting me to the No Limit Team and the Maverik Showtime Camp. I would like to thank my parents and coaches for supporting me through the recruiting process.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you’ve participated in?
I played on the Yorktown Ballers and was on the No Limit Team since the seventh grade. I played in the Maverik Showtime last year which was a great experience. I also played at the Moonlight Showcase Camp and I am representing Hudson Valley in the Empire State Cup games this weekend.
