The 2012 FIL U19 World Lacrosse Championships will get under way on Thursday, July 12 with opening ceremonies in Finland.

The United States, which has won all six of the previous competitions in World U-19 play, starts action as a heavy favorite in the 12-team event.

The U.S. team, which is filled with players and coaches from the tristate region, arrived in Turku, Finland on Monday night.

A pair of Long Islanders are among three team captains: defenseman Stephen Jahelka (Garden City High School/Harvard) and goaltender Zach Oliveri (Connetquot High School/UMass).

Mountain Lakes’ Tim Flynn is head coach of the U.S. team. Shoreham-Wading River’s Tom Rotanz is an assistant coach. Rotanz is Tweeting during the World Games in Finland. Follow him at Twitter.com/PowerShaft.

The U.S. starts action on Friday, July 13 against Australia. The championship game is set for Saturday, July 21. For the complete schedule, click here.
