The first rising sophomore from the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tristate region, has made a verbal college commitment.

He’s versatile attackman Jake Fox from the Trinity-Pawling School in the Hudson Valley.

Fox, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound righty, is from Orleans, Ontario and grew up playing box lacrosse. He’s also a standout in hockey and football.

“He’s an awesome kid, a three-sport sport athlete, great student, and very humble,” Trinity-Pawling coach Nic Bell.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Jake on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision?
The biggest reason I decided to verbally commit to Johns Hopkins was that it offers a one of a kind experience. JHU offers a high level of academics and it’s the only school I looked at that had lacrosse as their No. 1 sport on campus. I couldn’t be more excited to play for Coach (Dave) Pietramala.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was strongly considering Duke, Virginia, Brown, Yale and Ohio State. I had the chance to visit Duke and Virginia this summer.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My biggest strengths are my passing ability and seeing the field. I feel like I can finish well and have a good shot. I like to consider my style of play as an all-around attackmen. I feel that I can be put in any situation and be successful.

When did you first take up lacrosse in Canada, and when did you decide to attend Trinity-Pawling?
I first started playing box lacrosse in Canada when I was 8 years old. I started playing field lacrosse in Canada with the Edge program when I was 12 and was very fortunate to have Dean French, chairman of Team Canada Lacrosse as my first coach. He really stressed that if I wanted to go far in the sport I had to develop my off hand. It was an excellent coaching tip and one that I still think about at every practice.

About two years ago I started to hear from prep schools.  I talked to a few schools and coaches, however, after my first visit to Trinity-Pawling, I knew it was the right school for me. It has a very focused and structured high academic program and when you know, you know. Coach Nic Bell is the high school coach I want to play for. I actually cancelled some visits after my visit to Pawling as I was that sure about my decision.

How does playing football and hockey help you with your lacrosse skills?
Football helps me a lot with footwork, working within a team and conditioning. I’ve learned you can never take a play off because you could let your teammates down. Hockey helped me learn to play with my head up and make good decisions in a fast paced physical game. I believe playing both these sports has allowed me to develop a strong inside game at attack as the contact doesn’t bother me.

Fox sounds like a great get for Hop which will be loaded at attack the next few years

  2. Observer Lax says:

There’s definitely a trend of box players from Canada making it big in the field game.
