It will be quite a seven-day stretch.

Capping it off next Monday (Memorial Day), the college lacrosse season wraps up with the Division I men’s championship game in Foxboro, Mass., ending a Final Four that includes Loyola (Md.), Notre Dame, Maryland and Duke.

We will also have championships determined and championship game matchups set up at the high school level this week.

There also promise to be some upsets.

We had one on a rain-soaked Monday.

Defending state Class A girls champion Northport fell to East Islip 8-7 in the Suffolk County quarterfinals.

They’ll be plenty more opportunities for some surprises today.

Considering the competitive nature of the FCIAC this year, nothing should come as too much of a surprise.

Defending champion Darien, though, is unbeaten in 12 games against FCIAC foes and enters the today’s semifinals as the top seed and the favorite.

The Blue Wave face fourth-seeded Ridgefield, the defending Class L state champions, in the second of two semifinals to be played at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk. Game-time is 7:30 p.m. The teams met in the FCIAC final last year, with Darien winning 10-7. Darien took the regular-season meeting between the teams 14-11 on May 8.

You can watch the game at 10 p.m. on Thursday on MSG Varsity Channel 14 on Optimum. After that premiere, the game can be seen on On-Demand Channel 614 and msgvarsity.com.

Second-seeded Wilton and third-seeded New Canaan meet at 5 p.m. in the day’s first semi. It’s a rematch of the 2011 Class M state title game, won by Wilton 12-2. Wilton also won the teams’ regular-season meeting, 9-5 on April 5 in both teams’ season-opener.

Both squads are red-hot. New Canaan has won 11 straight since falling at Darien 13-3 on April 17. Wilton has won seven straight since a 15-14 overtime loss to Ridgefield.

A taped broadcast of the Wilton-New Canaan game can be seen starting later this week on Optimum on MSG Varsity On-Demand Channel 614 and msgvarsity.com.

The winners of today’s games at McMahon play in the FCIAC final on Friday night, May 25 back at McMahon.

You can check out a preview of today’s semifinals, featuring Joe and MSG Varsity’s Chad Cutler, that aired last night on “High School SportsDesk.”

Section 1’s semifinal-round field of games on Thursday will be set today.

Here are today’s quarterfinal matchups:

  4. lax1 says:

Brewster-Rye game should be a hard low scoring game. Both offenses put up big numbers last week in against lesser opponents but this should be a classic. Brewster is more athletic and I think a little better skill wise however Rye seems to play a very good team game. To be honest it comes down to Faceoffs and Goaltending. Brewster is more atheltic at the X and on the wings however I give the nod to Rye in the cage. Brewster goalie has been below average at best throughout the season. I predict a one goal game either way.

    • X Factor says:

lax1, I agree with your analysis for the most part. I’m not sure you are aware but Brewster’s regular faceoff guy is no longer on the team. I think “Dirty Harry Erickson” is goin to take most of the face offs. That could become an issue if Rye can keep it close.

      • slacrosse says:

Haven’t seen Brewster play but just based upon their record and schools they’ve played vs that of Rye, Brewster should be a couple of goals favorite.

      • lax1 says:

Um yea the kid hasen’t played all season for them so obviously I was talking about Erickson. The kid on Rye is very good from what I have seen but Erickson is hands down one of the best poles in the section and an probable AA selection. Should be a great battle tonight in Brewster.

  5. fan says:

The next two games for ‘town should be blowouts until the section finals

  6. LaxLessons.com says:

  65. slacrosse says:

Congrats to Ridgefield and New Canaan. Field, Canaan,Wilton and Darien—those are 4 VERY tough teams for sure.

    • laxr says:

Probably the deepest the FCIAC has been in a few years. Goalie play the difference, although Huffard was hung out to dry on plenty of goals (and the last two were empty net). Pretty foolish play by Darien in the first half, shooting right into the stick of Winne. They have the talent to beat zones, but in both this game and the Wilton game last year, horrid shot selection has doomed them. I just don’t see how this problem hasn’t been adressed – it’s such a simple solution: shoot low or you get benched! Wilton and NC take notes! Zone up against the Blue Wave, and you will be in good shape. NC in particular, with Carey in goal, should like their chances.
