Before we get to today’s action, a quick word about yesterday.

The nation’s top-ranked team, Garden City, is still unbeaten.

In Nassau County quarterfinal action  yesterday, the Trojans handled South Side 15-7. In the other Class B game played at Hofstra, Long Beach rolled to a 20-7 win over Plainview.

In Section 1, the big story was the No. 2 seed in Class C, Dobbs Ferry, falling in Round 1. The Eagles lost to No. 18 Pleasantville 10-8.

The most dramatic game of the day was played in Goldens Bridge, where John F. Kennedy Catholic pulled out a 12-11 overtime win upset-minded Irvington. Irvington had rallied to take a surprising 11-8 lead in the fourth quarter.

Also of note, ninth-seeded Horace Greeley, which lost twice during the regular season to archrival Fox Lane, pulled a 7-6 win against the eighth-seeded Foxes to earn a Tuesday quarterfinal date at top-seeded Yorktown, which has not lost to a Section 1 team this season.

The FCIAC quarterfinals headline today’s slate.

The slate is headlined by a 5 p.m. showdown between New Canaan, which has won 10 straight since a 13-3 loss at Darien April 17, against a young and developing Greenwich team that has more than held its own this season, finishing 9-7 and playing Darien to an 8-4 game.

Here’s the lineup:

No. 5 Staples at No. 4 Ridgefield, 11:30 a.m.
No. 8 Norwalk at Darien, 4 p.m.
No. 7 Ludlowe at No. 2 Wilton, 1 p.m.
No. 6 Greenwich at No. 3 New Canaan, 5 p.m.

You can watch the Greenwich-New Canaan game on MSG Varsity. The premiere broadcast will air on Tuesday at 4 p.m. on MSG Varsity Channel 14.  There will also be additional airings on Channel 14. The game will also be available On-Demand on Channel 614 and on msgvarsity.com.

It’s been an interesting regular season in Connecticut’s top conference, the FCIAC.

Darien finished 11-0 vs. FCIAC teams, but there has been plenty of competition. The Blue Wave pulled out a one-goal win  over Wilton, the team that last year ended Darien’s run of six straight state titles, and three-goal victory against defending Class L state champ Ridgefield. New Canaan, meanwhile, has been one of the hottest teams in the tristate.

So. …

Sayville is headed to the Suffolk County Class B semifinals. The second-seeded Golden Flashes rocked and rolled to a 12-4 quarterfinal-round win. Still, it was a good year for No. 7 Rocky Point. To say the least. The Eagles finished 10-7 after an off-year (3-13) last year. Sayville hosts No. 3 Eastport-South Manor in the semifinals on Thursday, May 24 at 4:30 p.m. For a gallery of photos, click here.
