The playoffs are under way on Long Island.

The Hudson Valley is soon to follow. Very soon.

In fact, the regular season ends today.

Among the big matchups is an intriguing crossover game.

Traditional rivals Yorktown and Wilton renew their series in a 7 p.m. game at Charlie Murphy Field in Yorktown for the Jim Turnbull Cup.

New Canaan of the FCIAC takes a nine-game win streak into its game today against visiting Rye of Section 1.  Game-time is 7 p.m. at Dunning Stadium.

Also today, Rockland rivals Clarkstown South and Suffern square off at 7 p.m. at the Suffern Middle School Sports Complex. Suffern, likely to draw the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the Class A sectional playoffs, hopes to bounce back from a 9-2 loss at home to Arlington.

Defending Section 1 Class C champion Bronxville, coming off an 18-12 win over Class B heavyweight Somers, hosts Class A’s White Plains at 4:30 p.m.

Rivals Horace Greeley and Fox Lane play Round 2 of their regular-season series at Fox Lane Memorial Stadium. Greeley won the first meeting 9-7 in Chappaqua.

There are also some intriguing playoff prep scrimmages in Suffolk County. Defending Long Island Class C champion Bayport-Blue Point visits Class A powerhouse West Islip at 4 p.m. Another Class C power, Shoreham-Wading River, meets a Class A heavyweight in Smithtown West at 4 p.m. at West. Finally, yet another Class C Long Island squad (Mount Sinai) tests itself vs. a Class  A team (Ward Melville) at 3 p.m.

In the span of a few days, several games showed the Section 1 Class A race is wide open as defending champ Mahopac ended a five-game losing streak by beating Suffern, which then turned around and beat two-time finalist Lakeland/Panas, which earlier this season beat Mahopac. The week ended with Arlington picking up what coach Donny Connolly described as “the biggest win in program history” by beating Suffern.

So. …

Who do you think is the favorite to win the Section 1 Class A crown?

If I’m not mistaken the Fox Lane HG game will determine who gets home field for round three on Friday. They look to be the 8 and 9 seeds. I think HG has more of a home field advantage with the uneven grass field.

I’d love to hear from anyone on LI about that SW SWR game I think those 2 teams can go far.

    • Also says:

The fox lane/greeley game has been implications on class a as well. If Fox lane wins then mahopac will end up with 51 pts and arlington will have 52 if they win tonight. Not a gimmie as pelham is solid and arlington will be without 2 starters..If Greeley wins and arlington wins, pac and ahs will be tied and pac would get the head to head tie breaker. Now if North Rockland wins they will push both teams down 1 slot with pac or ahs not making the top 4 seeds which would be a shame in my opinion as they would meet in quarters and not the semis.

  2. Old Rugger says:

  3. Blue White says:

Any predictions on the long-running Wilton/Yorktown rivalry?

Yorktown seems to have to much O for the Jekyll/Hyde D of Wilton, maybe the rain will slow them down and it’ll stay close.

Since we don’t know which Wilton is going to show I don’t find it galling this time to make an uneducated guess and say Yorktown snaps the 3-game skid to Wilton, 13-9.

12-11 Wilton Final, give Wilton the credit they did the won the GB’s and FO. Then Town turned in Town and just ran out of time.

    • laxr says:

That may be true, but it’s awfully hypocritical to make that claim and then turn around talk about how the Town-Darien game wasn’t as close as the score. When I suggested that Darien only woke up at the end (and when the same claim was made on behalf of Chaminade in 2010) in the loss to Yorktown, Town fans called it sour grapes. In short, I have no problem with the statement that Town only woke up at the end against Wilton (which is probably partially true), but then you can’t criticize Darien fans who said the same thing about their team earlier in the year.

P.S. I’m not sure if you were one of the people who called out Darien fans. This is a more of a general observation concerning the Town fan base.

      • Sec12012 says:

good response laxr.As a town fan I accept the lose and move on.I didn’t see game bc i live where its warm and nice :).Your connection to the darien game is spot on.Let’s face it anything can happen on any given day, these are such good programs.

        • Jay says:

I was there, Ytown played as poorly as I have seen them play until the third. They play well for three they win the game going away. That said, they didn’t and lost. Game is meaningless to both teams.

  40. LaxLessons.com says:

Final from NJ: Ridgewood 10, Summit 7

  41. sec1 says:

    Laxr,
I was not one of the people that called Darien, in fact I praised both programs.
I did say in one of my post that the game was not as close as the score, I havetotal respect for Darien.
The problem during the game was in my opinion the way it was called on the field the whole game, both coaching staffs frustrated. Darien has all the Talent to come back on anyone, but if you were at that game as I was it makes a little easier when 3 out the last 4 goals were man up with under 5 mins to play is the Eason I said it was not as it appeared. What I can tell you is I have seen every Yorktown/ Darien game, so I have a rough Idea about the Teams.

    • laxr says:

Fair enough. Although I think that for every EMO goal Darien had to make the score respectable at the end, Town had just as many, if not more EMO goals to break the game open, so it really offsets. I will say that Yorktown has made a believer of me; after the losses to Chaminade and Smithtown West I wrote them off as just another down Yorktown team. I now feel that this team is probably their best team since 09. If I had to guess as to how they stacked up, I’d put them just below Darien and St. A’s (who themselves are in the tier below GC, Chaminade, WI, and SW), probably on par with Summit and surging NC and Wilton teams (and Ward Melville), and ahead of Ridgefield, JJ, and Manhasset.

  42. LaxLessons.com says:

Final: Hen Hud 19, North Salem 8

  43. sec1 says:

    Laxr,
I might disagree with who had more in the Darien game, as for your comparison with other teams I agree with some. St Anthony is a push, Wilton even though they won I put them a notch below and NC I have not seen this yr. Cham WI GC STW are above. What I will say if Town can win half the FO and GB which is a big part of the game the O is very hard to stop. Now the real season starts, Town should win the Sec and make to the State Semis where GC should be also, will see what happens then, 50-50 it will be a game as it was last yr.

    • laxr says:

I watched the game. Both teams had several EMO goals. I might be inclined to put Yorktown above Wilton despite the head to head, but I think the rout of Fairfield Prep (as inconsistent as they may be), puts them in the same category. New Canaan came out of the gates slow but is on a 10 game winning streak, which includes dominant wins over Ridgefield and JJ. Yorktown Played St. Anthony’s close, but outside of that their only performance of note is the win over Darien (and perhaps the close win over JJ to start the season), so I don’t think that one can definitively say they are above Wilton because there just aren’t enough performances to truly override the head to head. St. Anthony’s is not a push in my book; they have a better resume and they won head to head (it’s not a large gap, but you have to give St. A’s and Darien the edge based on the whole body of work IMO). This is all speculation of course. Unlike in the past couple of years, I can legitimately see Town threatening GC if the Trojans don’t bring their A game (with all due respect, if GC plays to their potential, it will not be a 50-50 game; this isn’t a dig at Yorktown – it’s just that SW, WI, and Chaminade are the only teams that I could see beating GC at their best).

  44. Relax says:

There are no losers when the MOST STORIED Programs in CT & Sect.1 faceoff to Prime one another for their playoff runs. Congrats to the program that gave me my start in coaching. Hope you succeed in the playoffs.

    • Old Rugger says:

Excellent post Relax. How many state championships between these two programs. Hopefully both coaches saw things that they can work on over the next few days to improve their chances. The only way to control town is to win FO.

      • Relax says:

When you have Teddy O as you’re FO man you’re going to win a good amount. He’s only a JR & is one of the finest FO kids in the region. He’s also one of the nicest kids around. Finest Kind! He’s The Man at midfield as well And when he wins the FO & comes up with the ball Watch Out. What a fastbreak threat! Just can’t say enough about the kid. He’s gonna dominate another yr for the Warriors & then be a great D1 player. Really proud of him & all the Warriors. Can’t tell you how much I want them to WIN ANOTHER CT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

  45. sec1 says:

    Laxr,
Yes St Antonys resume of wins this yes I agree, all time it’s not close.
As for my comment on 50-50 with GC I meant if both teams win half the GB anf FO it will be a game.
