We started a week that wraps up today with Cinco de Mayo (not to mention the Kentucky Derby) by spotlighting three games this weekend.
One was completed last night. The other two are today.
A strong second half lifted Yorktown to a 14-10 win over Lakeland/Panas and its 20th Charlie Murphy Cup in the 23-year history of the event. The Huskers, who trailed 8-6 at halftime, outscored the Rebels 8-2 in the second half.
Nick Mariano had four goals and three assists, Conor Gately three goals and two assists and Connor Vercruysse three goals for Yorktown, which has won six straight.
So now, we turn to today.
We start, of course, with the granddaddy of them all in high school lacrosse.
Garden City, which beat Manhasset twice last season (in the Woodstick Classic and the Nassau County Class B title game), enters the 4:30 p.m. game as a solid favorite. The unbeaten Trojans remain the nation’s top-ranked team. You can watch the game live on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14, starting at 4 p.m., with the pregame show hosted by Keith Irizarry, and on msgvarsity.com.
The third spotlight game of the weekend is a 2 p.m. clash between three-time CHSAA champion and national power St. Anthony’s against another national power, Darien, winners of six Class M Connecticut state titles the last seven years. Game-time is 2 p.m. at DHS Stadium.
Also of note in Connecticut, Chaminade visits Fairfield Prep at 4 p.m. at Fairfield University’s Lessing Stadium and Ridgefield hosts Brien McMahon at 6 p.m. at Tiger Hollow Stadium.
In a contest between contenders in the FCIAC and Section 1, New Canaan visits John Jay at 7 p.m.
Long Island meets New Jersey as Shoreham-Wading River visits Mountain Lakes in a noon game.
Also of note in the Garden State, Shawnee plays at Bridgewater-Raritan.
In a New York vs. Massachusetts showdown, Niskayuna plays at Duxbury.
Section 1 meets Section 9 when Clarkstown South hosts Minisink Valley at 6 p.m.
Dobbs Ferry’s unbeaten start will be on the line when it plays Pelham (10-1) at 7 p.m. at Glover Field.
Rivals reunite when Horace Greeley hosts Fox Lane at 3 p.m. Ten of the last 11 meetings between the teams have been decided by three goals or less.
You can catch the premiere broadcast of the game on Tuesday, May 8 at 4 p.m. on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14. After the premiere on Channel 14, you can watch the broadcast on On-Demand Channel 614 and msgvarsity.com.
Bacause of a lack of available officials today, the Bronxville-Somers game thatnhad been scheduled for today has been moved to Monday at 5:30. Today’s morning SATs have resulted in a high number of games starting at 2 p.m. or after.
There are also some big games in the prep school ranks. Avon Old Farms visits Trinity-Pawling and Choate hosts Berkshire School.
Needless to say, there are many other games in the tristate region today. Scroll down to check the links to access the complete schedules.
