The nation’s longest continuously played high school rivalry — the 121st Woodstick Classic — proved to be a showcase for the host team.

Unbeaten Garden City, the nation’s top-ranked team, picked up its third straight win over Manhasset 9-3, building a 6-0 halftime lead.

That was not a surprise.

But what happened at Fairfield University’s Lessing Field was.

Chaminade suffered its first loss of the season in stunning fashion, falling to Fairfield Prep 11-10. The same Fairfield Prep team that fell to Delbarton 14-2 a week earlier.

The Jesuits’ win was one of three banner victories for Fairfield-based squads.

Darien, which earlier this season downed Manhasset, beat another Long Island power by rallying to beat St. Anthony’s 8-7 behind sophomore goalie Phil Huffard’s 16 saves. Henry West and Peter Lindley each had three goals and Case Matheis two goals and two assists for the Blue Wave.

New Canaan, which fell to Darien 13-3 earlier this season picked up its sixth straight win since that April 17 setback as the Rams improved to 9-3 by beating John Jay 10-5.

What will be the outcome of the showdown between the two remaining teams that are unbeaten in FCIAC play — Darien and Ridgefield – at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Ridgefield’s Tiger Hollow Stadium.

I voted in the poll but let me throw out the first pick…

    FIELD 11, DARIANNE 6

  2. CT Lax says:

    Darien 9, Ridgefield 8

  3. M Fan says:

Darien easily 11- 5. RF, with the exception of #4 and #14, is just not that good. Midfield is horrible. Zero dodgers. This super sophomore kid is nothing from what i’ve seen. Darien can either pack it in and let Goalie clean up long range shots, or pressure everything. Both will work.
