Ryan Kearney loves lacrosse.

But even though the Somers senior is a key contributor for the Section 1 title-contending Tuskers, his college choice indicates he’s looking well beyond after his playing days are over.

The starting longstick midfielder committed to Becker College in Massachusetts not just for its lacrosse program, but because of another program.

It’s nationally renowned Video Game Design and Production program.

“One of the main factors in choosing Becker College  is because it’s nationally ranked for its computer graphics/ video game design program,” Kearney said. “It is also a small rural college that is a little over two hours from home.”

Kearney, who also played soccer and basketball at Somers, considered Ithaca, RPI, Drexel and Sacred Heart, in addition to Becker.

“I visited Lehigh, Yale, UMass, the University of Delaware and Ithaca,” he said. “But overall, Becker College appealed to me the most.”

Kearney, who has a high lacrosse IQ, has strong stick skills that help him come away with ground balls.

“My style of play would be more technical than physical,” he said. “Also, I’m obviously a defensively oriented, team player.”

One who’s looking forward to college for plenty more than just lacrosse.

“I became interested in Video Game Production and Design because I enjoy the graphic design class I take in the high school,” Kearney said. “I also used to play video games a lot, but not as often recently because of lacrosse and senior obligations.”
