One of the most much-awaited annual matchups in the tristate region will be renewed tonight as Darien visits Yorktown at 7 o’clock at historic Charlie Murphy Field.

Darien, at 8-0 and coming off its first win over Manhasset since 2008, is riding high.

Yorktown (6-2), which suffered back-to-back one-sided losses to Chaminade and Smithtown West after a 4-0 start, has outscored its last two opponents 41-14.

There are several interesting matchups to keep an eye on.

First, Yorktown’s Marquette-bound playmaking attackman Conor Gately will be defended by one of the region’s top defenders, Cornell-bound senior Tony Britton.

Darien’s all-time leading scorer, Case Matheis, is likely to see more than one Husker defending him, most notably Hopkins-bound junior Trevor Koelsch and Syracuse-bound sophomore Austin Fusco.

The rivalry began in the 1990s when Darien coach Jeff Brameier, the first and only coach in Blue Wave varsity history, was looking to schedule a regional power to test his team — much like Yorktown did years earlier when it established rivalries with such programs as Wilton and Ward Melville.

Darien has won two straight against Yorktown, including last season’s meeting 9-6. Yorktown’s last win in the series came in 2009 when it won 9-6 at Darien.

You can watch the premiere broadcast of the game on Friday at 4 p.m. on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14. After the premiere, you can catch it anytime on On-Demand Channel 614 or msgvarsity.com.

Unbeaten defending Section 1 Class A champion Mahopac visits Lakeland/Panas in a rematch of last year’s Section 1 Class A title game, won by the Pac 7-5. Game-time is 7 p.m. at Lakeland High School.

On Long Island, unbeaten Comsewogue (10-0) plays at Shoreham-Wading River (7-1) at 4:30 p.m. Also in Suffolk, Eastport-South Manor hosts Sayville at 7 p.m. and Rocky Point visits Bayport-Blue Point at 4:30 p.m.

The Nassau County slate is highlighted by a 4:30 p.m. game between host Lynbrook and Manhasset.

Somers will be looking for its second win against a CHSAA foe when it hosts Fordham Prep at 5:30 p.m. The Tuskers opened the season with a 14-6 win against Iona Prep, a team Fordham Prep rallied to beat 11-10 in overtime.

In Section 1 games, Horace Greeley plays at Pleasantville, Fox Lane hosts Harrison and Nanuet visits Suffern in 4:30 p.m. games while, in 5 p.m. action, Hen Hud hosts Brewster and Byram Hills plays at Rye.

In an intriguing FCIAC game, a senior-laden Joel Barlow team, off to a 5-0 start and coming off a surprisingly one-sided 17-4 win over Newtown, hosts Staples at 4 p.m. on Field J.

Also of note on a busy day in Connecticut, Wilton hosts St. Joseph’s-Trumbull at 4:30 p.m.

  1. BlueGold says:

Is it true that our game Thursday vs JJ is at Somers? Anyone??

  2. Laxtime says:

Lots of big ones today. Here are my picks…

    Darien 10, Town 6

    LP 11, Pac 10

    Wogue 9, SWR 7

    Set 11, Lynbrook 6

    Rye 7, Byram 6

    What does everyone think??

  3. Lax Novice says:

As the Yankees like to say, it’s only a rivalry if the other team wins once in a while. Darien 14 – Yorktown 4.

Over/under for points by the lock All-Americans Gately and Fusco tonight – 2 1/2

    Over/under for points by Matheis/Murphy/Seiler – 8 1/2

    Good luck to all.

      How’s the crow tasting? LLLOOOLLL!!!!

    • justlaxin says:

Game has now been split the last 4 years. I think that is rivalry worthy. Tom L would have loved it last night. Not calling out refs, but how do games get distributed. They seemed overmatched by speed of game last night. Trevor K did great job on Matheis. West has some shot. Gately is fantastic. Something to prove with all the Case hype? If Town can win faceoffs, they can beat anyone. In SMW and Cham, they barely had ball. SMW kid was like 17 of 19.

  4. Cross Westchester says:

They look good. I might flip the LP/Pac and Byram/Rye scores.

    • Tale of Two Half's says:

Slow start for BH in the 1st half. Rye dominated 1st half possession . Its tough for any team let alone team like Byram that is (long on athletes/short on lacrosse players) to turn the ball over as much as they do/have and win against good teams. After the Byram coach shortened his bench considerably in the second half, the game was more indictive of where the two teams are

  27. Relax says:

Town’s goalie really impressive! Tiny kid. Didn’t look like this when he was thrust into action vs SW. He’s been absolutely incredible. Some improvent. 46. Lax Observer says:

Especially impressive for Yorktown doing this with a goalie who was no their starter when the season began. He obviously stepped up and has a bright future.

  47. laxr says:

Fantastic performance for Town. Interesting contrast from last year, when they got smacked by all the CT teams, and played all of their LI foes down to the wire (except for Chaminade).

    • Relax says:

Town did the smackin last nite & as much as I like Wilton look for ‘town to Smack that ct team. Don’t think they play Rfield but even w/ Roy at the helm they’d Smack them around to. Different level of play has begun. You won’t see the same ‘town team from the 1st half if the yr. They’ve made their adjustments w/ Fusco & Veracruyse & the new goalie is playing at a very high level to Stone matheis & crew time & again. Congrats Indeed!

      • laxr says:

I don’t think that you will see this Town team consistently for the rest of the season. Last night was Town at their very best, and it’s simply not sustainable game after game. Also, you can bet that nobody will be overlooking them from here on out, as Darien did last night. This is why some people get frustrated with Yorktown; they win one big game, and all of a sudden they say they are going to smack everybody. Same thing happened in 2010 when they won an almost identical game against Chaminade, and look how that season turned out. The fact is that they caught fire against an unprepared Darien team (and shame on them for not taking Town seriously); I still think Darien takes at least 7 if they played 10 times (and before you jump on me for this, just look back over the archives and you’ll see Town fans saying this after every loss to a big time team). Please, just let their play from here on out do the talking, because I could do without hearing about this game for the next 3 years like that Town-Chaminade game from 2010.

        • Relax says:

OH I SEE… DARIEN OVERLOOKED TOWN & DIDN’T PREPARE FOR THEM.. ALSO THEY HAD A HORRIBLE BUS RIDE & MOST OF THE KIDS HAD TUMMY ACHES.. ALL I KNOW IS THEY HAD A WORSE RIDE BACK TO CT & THE TUMMY ACHES WERE HEADACHES FROM GETTIN SMACKED AROUND ALL GAME.. GLAD IT WAS A NITE GAME OR ELSE YOU WOULD OF SAID THE SUN WAS IN THEIR EYES

          • laxr says:

Nothing to do with the bus ride. It was clear that Town came out more prepared and playing harder; that’s a fact, and it has nothing to do with talent, nor was it representative of the way either team came out of the gates in any other games this season. I feel comfortable in saying this not only because its the truth, but because I’ve heard Yorktown fans say these things time and again. Don’t let the victory get in your heads or else more games of the Chaminade/Smithtown West variety are going to occur against Wilton, St. A’s,etc…Darien is a perfect example of getting overconfident after winning a few big games. And by the way, 11-9 isn’t nearly as much of a smacking as some of the other games in the series (and I can always use the glare from the stadium lights as an excuse in a night game, can’t I? 😉

        • Justlaxin says:

Town actually beat Chaminade in 08 09 and 10. Just saying

      • Big Easy says:

“Relax” Relax…great win for Town…glad to see them play well. Yorktown’s excuse last year after a beat down by Ridgefield (not a 2 goal victory, but a 14-8 thrashing) was similar to Dariens this year…kids were flat, game doesn’t mean anything because it’s out of state, etc. Town dropped Ridgefield this year, not the other way around. I am pretty sure that Ridgefield will add them ANY TIME they are willing. Ridgefield Lacrosse- 2011 Section 1 Champs

What makes tonite’s win by ‘town really special is… No one picked them to win in laxlesson’s predictions. Most people picked ‘town to get smoked by the wave. It shows that like the sign says in the Mt Vernon Knights’ BBall locker room, “tradition never graduates” ‘town’s tradition is second to none in sect.1 lax. Up & coming programs are fun, but traditiona powerhouses like ‘town are special. Congrats kids, coaches, family & fans. Murphy Magic was in effect tonite!

  57. mr.Reality says:

Arlington over putnam valley 15-6….solid 4 quarters for the admirals.

    • upstate says:

That is an impressive score. Good for them, they needed it after their murderers row schedule to start the year.

  58. Old Rugger says:

1st Congrats to town I didn’t see this commin. Ytown goalie played great. Ytown attack moved the ball cleanly and crisply and found the cutters or created too many slides for Darien. Darien goalie not his best game (lots of 15 yarders). I’d bet the stats have Ytown almost 2-1 in GBs.
Gately looked better than Matheis today (It might have something to do with #18 on Ytown)
Somers and JJ have their work cut out for them.
    A good section one win!

    • slacrosse says:

The Town/Somers game should be a great game Th–good luck to both teams.

    • slacrosse says:

From what I’ve read it seems like Town played “out of their minds”–ground balls, putting the body out to block shots, etc, etc, etc! Aside from basic high level lax skills on show if there is any credence to saying sometimes the team who wins “wanted it more”, maybe it applied to Town last night.

      • Relax says:

They wanted it more & They played better. “out of their minds” not so sure. They raised their level of play & switching Fusco & Veracruyse probably helped, which means they have great coaching

  59. slacrosse says:

Yes Lax Novice does “have his days”.

I agree that one games doesn’t make a season for sure and any team that goes into the next game after a big win, over confident, could be in trouble (wonder if Darien could have been somewhat over confident coming into this game?).

Lots more tough games for both teams to show how good they are including tough Section 1 games + St Anthony and Wilton for Town and St. Anthony and Ridgefield for Darien,

Of course the ultimate goal for both teams is to win their respective Sections/Leagues and win the CT and NYS championships.

  60. LaxLessons.com says:

UNC-bound goalie Eddie Gilman of Hen Hud scored a goal in yesterday’s 10-8 loss to Brewster. Hopkins-bound Matt Ledwin was 16 of 21 on FOs.

  61. Lax Novice says:

It’s nice to be wanted. lol

I’ll probably write my thoughts on last night’s big UPSET win by Yorktown tomorrow when I get the chance, but I wanted to make sure it’s clear that IMO Yorktown was the better team last night and executed their game plan better than Darien did and deserved to win.

I wanted to ask if anyone had the official totals on the penalties and EMO goals/opportunities from last evening. The story in MSGV by Issac Cass has some asterisked but misses at least two EMO goals by Yorktown last night that were described in the highlight video. I’m more interested in the percentage of scores to opportunities, esp. in the 2nd quarter when the game was blown wide open. Thanks in advance.

I agree with most of the comments on the Abbott and Costello officiating duo, although I don’t think those guys being assigned was any accident. What I want to know is where the 3rd guy went. I know taxes are high in Yorktown Heights, but if you have trouble scraping together enough $$$ for three officials, let us know and we’ll pass a hat or something.

    • mr.Reality says:

Section one like the fciac assigns the officials…A 3rd ref can be added if the host school requests it. Officials are scheduled before the season begins in most cases….

      • Lax Novice says:

Presumably in Section 1 coaches evaluate officials and have the discretion to either approve or disallow specific men from working their teams games, and Yorktown is the preeminent boys lacrosse program in Section 1, correct?

The point is that if I’m looking for my team to play with an edge and be extremely aggressive in its approach, I’m not looking for the most knowledgeable and experienced officials I can get, and I’m certainly not looking for the three-man setup that is standard in the post-season and most beneficial to keep up with the pace of play for two of the top teams in the region. Finding two guys who couldn’t keep track of basic stuff was a stroke of genius on Yorktown’s part. Please remind me the last time a game was played in Section 1 when substitutes ran off their bench, across the substitution box and engaged in a shoving contest with opposing players on the field of play after a ball rolled out of bounds by the opponents sideline without penalty.

I’m going to watch the replay, probably Saturday, to check on some of the things that led to the Husker’s victory. Darien has now gotten off to very slow starts in their three most competitive games, 1-1 vs. New Canaan, 1-3 down to Manhasset and now Yorktown after one quarter. Some basics on defense for the wave simply didn’t taken care of. Allowing a sniper like Frank Fusco to run free to his strong left-hand side to shoot on the run within 15 yards is simply unacceptable. A review of the boxscore shows one goal from Case and eight from the midfielders, I’d like to see upon review what allowed that to occur, if only to see what we can expect from other teams going forward. The inability to do anything with the 6 on 4 in the 3rd quarter was the real momentum changer in my view, not getting the game closer on the scoreboard at that point was simply a killer. Allowing one even strength goal in the 2nd half (a Fusco hands-free snipe) wasn’t enough to makeup for the hole dug in the 2nd quarter, how that occurred will be interesting to see.

Also interested to know how Case’s 1-3 for 4 points was being handled while Conor Gately’s 0-4 for 4 points was total domination. That sounds like the kind of math that lets Ridgefield claim an 8-8 win over Manhasset in their scrimmage.

Hope Somers requests three officials for Yorktown’s game tonight. They also ought to keep a copy of “Lacrosse for Dummies” down by the scorer’s table, just in case.

        • Curious? says:

Lax Novice, maybe I missed it, but did you blog your promised formal review of the broadcast that was to occur on Saturday?

  62. Laxit says:

Lax Novice, if are seriously comparing the performances of Gately and Matheis on Tuesday then you need a copy of Lacrosse for Dummies ASAP. Case was 1-1 through three quarters when the game was decided. The Darien offense always runs through him. Not Tuesday thanks to Koelsch (who played by far his best game of the year), Austin Fusco and the Town slide packages. Gately was the playmaker who ignited the Yorktown runs that decided the game.

OK, enough from me. Lax Novice, keep talking. As my grandfather said, when you are having an argument with a fool, don’t interrupt him.

    • Lax Novice says:

I’d never interrupt you, but you have your facts wrong, unsurprisingly. Gately was 0-3 through three quarters, 0-4 for the full game and three of those were on EMO. So that’s zero goals, one assist for Gately at even strength Tuesday night and that was in the 1st 4 minutes of the game. I’d hope for more production from a prospective All American than that. This is why I’ll be looking for the penalties and conversions in extra-man situations on the replay, I suspect that’s where the game was won, mostly due to Darien’s ineffectiveness than anything the Huskers did.

So first it’s Yorktown specifically handpicking ref’s who will let Yorktown win. Then it’s you’re going to “review” the tape to see how it could be that the mighty Blue Wave could possibly be bested. Finally we get the winning statement that Yorktown didn’t really win it, Darien was just ineffective. Even managed to get your obligatory snark at Ridgefield in there. Haha. Priceless!

Glad you’re amused. Looking forward to May 8th at Tiger Hollow Stadium for the FCIAC regular season title and #1 seed.

Sorry the facts don’t jive with what you want to conclude about Yorktown’s well-deserved win the other night. Gately was a minor factor in the Huskers upset win. What I have to see for myself since there is no published report of the penalties and conversions on the man-up is that I suspect that the margin was due to Yorktown being much more successful converting the EMO than Darien was. That’s all I want to see for myself on the tape. The soph goalie for Yorktown had a great night and is due full credit for his contributions to the victory. I suspect a viewing will show that Darien made too many unforced errors and Yorktown took advantage of all their opportunities, including the guys they had assigned to work the game, to get the upset. I’m sorry you didn’t quite comprehend that the first time.

Looks as if Yorktown is riding that momentum tonight against Somers. Good for them, I hope they have a great run in the post-season.

I was at the Yorktown Darien game on Wednesday night. I invite all to watch the game tonight on MSG Varsity, then blog back you wisdom. My humble opinion, Yorktown outplayed Darien. Koelsch shut down Case and all of the Ytown defense played a outstanding game. Graham was the key to the defense for sure. Although I had some giggles over some of your explanations above as to why Darien lost and Yorktown won, not much was on the mark. Marr is a great coach but doesn’t have to power to pick specific referees for specific games(they don’t pay him that much to bribe officals, lol). It would be brilliant if it was planned but both the Ytown and the Darien coaches were screaming at one of the referees because what should have been changes in possessions where penalty calls where box time was served. Ytown bench (coach) received a penalty that put Ytown down two men. No, I don’t think Marr planned the field referees. One point above that I do agree with was that there was not call with the scuffle on the sideline. With that, Gately was well covered but was able to make some great contributions as the QB of the O. Darien looked past Ytown and Yorktown was prepared. Case, although a great player, was frustrated and it showed. He was slammed his stick on the ground, didn’t chasing down a gb, and was caught ball watching at one point. Off night, maybe? His one goal was a beauty. Darien was a bit stunned by the onslaught of the contributors and the debth of the Yteam. Yorktown needs to continue to play for the full 42 minutes (in my humble opinion once again) but in this case, the referee calls aided the Blue Wave to come within two. Watch and see tonight, for me this was really an 11-5 ball game with Ytown dominating from the very start of this game.
