One of the things that makes lacrosse special is that, when two very strong teams square off, invariably the game winds up going down to the wire.

Last night was a perfect example.

Manhasset and Darien, both of whom are among the Top 20 teams in the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse National Rankings, went toe-to-toe for three quarters before a late run by the Blue Wave, who ended the game with five unanswered goals, produced a 10-7 win.

Case Matheis was equally efficient as both a feeder and finisher, with three goals and four assists. Bobby Weaver had four goals and one assists and Tim Murphy two goals. The Blue Wave got a big lift from a sophomore. First-year starting goaltender Phil Huffard, the varsity backup netminder behind Dylan Torrey as a freshman, had 11 saves.

Dino LaValle led Manhasset with three goals. Quinn Moroney had four assists.

Upcoming games against Yorktown and Ridgefield will be interesting tests as the Blue Wave now have realistic hopes of an unbeaten regular season.

Out in Suffolk, West Islip, which beat Smithtown West in overtime in last year’s Suffolk Class A final, beat Smithtown West in overtime in their latest meeting.

The beat goes on for the Lions, who got the game-winner from midfielder Jon Reese, assisted by Tom Moore, after tying it in the closing seconds of regulation.

In other action yesterday, Lakeland/Panas handled Rye 11-3 and Somers held off Brewster 7-4.

Quite a day.

Now to today.

There are a few intriguing 7 p.m. games – two are crossovers and one an intra-county contest.

Wilton plays at St. Anthony’s in a Connecticut vs. New York CHSAA showdown and Yorktown hosts Shenendehowa.

In a Rockland County clash, Suffern hosts Tappan Zee.

Also in Rockland, Clarkstown South visits rival Nyack at 7 p.m. and Nanuet plays at Clarkstown North at 4 p.m.

In a Westchester game of note, Pelham hosts Bronxville at 4:30 p.m.

Hicksville and host Port Washington highlight the 10-game Nassau slate in a 4:30 game.

Suffolk hosts Westhampton at 7 p.m. in Suffolk action.

Shen at Yorktown. Anyone got a Time???

  5. sec1201 says:

I’d rather see Town play Niskayuna or a LI team on a friday night.York-11 Shen -6

  6. slacrosse says:

    Rooting for Jay tomorrow.

They’ll have to maintain the momentum and quality of play they ended with vs Sett to have a shot. I hope so as they’re facing probably the best Class A team in Nassau County with strong wins over good team and 1 goal loss to “Nade” in OT. No doubt Pequa will be prepared to face a zone from Jay early on.

  7. LaxLessons.com says:

Tomorrow’s Niskayuna at Somers game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., has been moved up to 6 p.m. because of the threat of thunderstorms.

  8. laxforfun says:

Why is everyone so high on the one goal loss? I mean, JJ scored 8 goals in the first half and had a 5 goal lead then in the second half JJ only scored two goals and not only allowed Set back in the game but win it. So why isn’t anyone asking what happened? Did JJ go flat? Did they not adjust the defense to offset Set’s adjustments?

  9. sec12012 says:

    town up 3-1

  10. sec12012 says:

town taking care of shen 5-1

  11. LI Guy says:

St A’s leads Wilton 4-2 at half

  12. The Rock says:

Suffern up 6-1 on TZ at half

  13. LaxLessons.com says:

Final: Hicksville 8, Port Washington 7 in double OT. Mike McIllwee had six goals, including the winner in the second OT.

  14. Syracuse says:

    Yorktown 20, Shen 11 (Final)

  15. Ctlax says:

    St.A’s crushed Wilton . 11-4.

  16. Laxit says:

    South beat Nyack 9-5

  17. sec1 says:

    Town vs Shen,
This game was not close at all I knew Shen was down, Towns O was very good tonight the D was average at best. Shen scored 5 goals off of 3rd and 4th team. Towns D better come to play againts Darien or it could be a long night.

  18. ECLax says:

St. A’s beat Wilton 11-4 ? Any insight? What happened to Wilton?

  19. Ripit says:

Big difference between JV and Varsity…but saw a great JV game yesterday Nyack vs. Clarkstown South. Nyack’s goalie was Phenomenal! Then I found out he was in 7th grade. Don’t know his name but he should be on everyone’s radar…wow.
