It was a relatively light day for games yesterday, but there was no shortage of big news in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut region.

It started bright and early in the morning. As we first told you here on Twitter, another sophomore standout from the tristate, made a college commitment.

Iona Prep faceoff specialist extraordinaire Mike Orefice gave a verbal commitment to accept a scholarship offer from one of the nation’s top-ranked D-I teams, Loyola. For more, be sure to check the full story posted here late last night.

As we also told you later in the morning on Twitter, another commitment was made when Eastchester senior Pat Guido, a three-year starter on defense, decided on Manhattanville. Be sure to check back for Pat’s thought’s on his choice.

Speaking of Eastchester, the big story coming out of yesterday’s game was the performance of EHS senior Tom Cirillo. The Salisbury University-bound star attackman had a career-high and school record nine goals in a 12-10 loss to Pelham, giving him a school-record 143 goals for his career. For more on that, including Tom’s thoughts on the record, check the full story.

In other noteworthy games, resurgent Rocky Point beat Huntington 9-3 and Suffern handled North Rockland 11-8.

Now, to today.

The big matchup is a 4:30 p.m. contest between defending FCIAC champ Darien, fresh off big back-to-back wins over Wilton and Torrey Pines (Calif.), and New Canaan, a team expected to contend for the top spot in the county.

In another showdown of FCIAC titles contenders, Ridgefield meets Staples.

For a look back at last week, and a look ahead to the Darien-New Canaan game and Darien’s Thursday showdown against Manhasset, be sure to check Joe’s segment with Shawna Ryan on MSG Varsity’s “High School SportsDesk.”

In the Hudson Valley, there was also no shortage of eventful games to review and plenty of others to preview. For more on that, check Joe’s segment with Shawna here.

In Nassau County, Syosset visits Oceanside at 7 p.m. and Manhasset, fresh off its 11-10 OT win against John Jay, hosts Plainedge at 6 p.m.

The Suffolk slate is highlighted by a 4:30 p.m. game at Sachem East vs. West Islip.

Among the games of note in the Hudson Valley, Lakeland/Panas hosts Fordham Prep at 5 p.m. and Arlington plays at Mahopac at 4:30 p.m.

Yorktown 21 Hen Hud 3 (final). A nice bounce-back win (angry thrashing?) by Town after the Long Island trip to remind everyone that Town is still the best team in Section 1.

  14. sec12012 says:

Mahopac needed ot to beat Arlington.wow

    • Pac Lax says:

Pac was up 7-1 after 1Q. Arlington outworked them…. Sloppy game by both teams.

      • hmmmm says:

I think pac is undisciplined and very easy to figure out. Watch many games throughout section 1 and saw them play wappingers and before there was a long break for an injury (ambulance). It was surprisingly close. In Class A, L/P stands alone. I think Come May, 1 thing will be consistant, Yorktown will win class b but all over there will be some surprises.

    • not surprised says:

      They needed two overtime periods

  15. Anthony says:

    LP 7, Fordham Prep 4

Not a great effort for LP but a win’s a win.

    • laxfan says:

That is LP in a nutshell. The coaches and kids think way too highly of themselves. They are nowhere near the teams of the last few years, but think they are. They need to have their cages rattled a bit.

  16. VernDaddy420 says:

Town on 3, town on 3……

    1,2,3…TOWN!

    Solid W boys!
