Call it Telltale Thursday.

A couple of results yesterday were just that — telling.

Let’s start in the FCIAC, where Darien and Wilton met up in a rematch of last year’s Class M state semifinal, won by Wilton, ending Darien’s hopes of a seventh straight state title.

Darien took the latest meeting 10-8, snapping an 8-8 tie with 3:30 to go on a goal by Duke-bound senior attackman Case Matheis, who became the all-time leading scorer in school history in the Blue Wave’s previous game against Fairfield-Warde.

Matheis, who was sidelined from last year’s state semi vs. the Warriors after suffering a torn meniscus in the state quarterfinals, finished with four goals and two assists despite being face-guarded by Wilton’s Robbie Keers.

The result of the latest meeting may have been different had it not been for the exceptional 18-save performance by Darien sophomore goaltender Phil Huffard.

The game left both teams anxiously awaiting a possible postseason rematch as they appear to be the clear frontrunners in the FCIAC, with Ridgefield and New Canaan also in the mix.

Somers showed Section 1 Class B could very well be a three-horse race with the Tuskers, Yorktown and John Jay. Somers won at John Jay 9-6 behind the strong goaltending of Holy Cross-bound senior Chris Cousin. Cousin’s twin brother, Kevin, fast emerging as one of the top offensive players in the Hudson Valley, had three goals.

St A’s up 4-3 at half

  2. Ray says:

Joe, don’t forget Yorktown at Smithtown West, Saturday at 3pm !!

  3. LI Lax says:

St’ A’s overcomes a 2 goal 4th quarter deficit to win 7-6. LCC appears to be for real.

any color to share on the game?

      • slacrosse says:

Nice game and got to say LCC is one gritty team and was very pumped for this game. Their goalie was very tough and stopped almost all of SA bouncing shots at him (they were not no brainer saves). They had a tall kid at attack who SA allowed to get his hands free who scored a few goals.

Maybe SA was taking this team for granted. I feel that SA was definitely the better team, skill-wise, but SA looked not close to an ultra elite team today, particularly on O. SA had a strong advantage on possession coming from winning most FO’s and prob got the better of ground balls but shot selection/direction was poor. Could not find cutters (in part a credit to LCC clogging the middle) and took lots of 20-25 yd decent SOG which the LCC goalie was routinely stopping.

As LI Lax said LCC is for real and deserves a lot of credit for upholding the fact that CA has high quality lax teams.

But from what I saw I’ll still give SA a strong advantage and say that they can play FAR better then today’s 7-6 score. Obviously Chaminade was far more dominating over Yorktown who I feel is stronger then LCC.

slacrosse, Thanks for the breakdown and insights on the game. Cali and other non-traditional states( FL-St. Andrews)) teams are coming on strong.

You seem to be at every big game do you work or are you off for holiday week?

          • slacrosse says:

Retired (trying to be that is).

Next up tomorrow: Darien/Torrey Pines (TP has only 1 loss to LCC)

Think I overheard an LCC parent saying they were surprised that they beat TP (by 2 goals).

        • Cali lax says:

Face off for SA was unbelievable. We had no answer for him

        • X marks the spot says:

          thank you for the context

  4. Lax says:

    Mamaroneck 12 Oceanside 11 OT
