The regular season in high school lax has started everywhere.
But that doesn’t mean recruiting commitments have stopped.
As we told you yesterday on Twitter, another highly regarded tristate sophomore has made his college choice.
Grant Limone, a 6-foot-3 goaltender at Weston (Conn.) who had 15 saves in a season-opening win over Masuk, has verbally committed to No. 4-ranked Loyola, which stayed unbeaten yesterday by beating Fairfield.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Grant on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I wanted to make sure that all of the schools I visited were a good academic and athletic fit. I took my time with the recruiting process. I went on one or two visits a month and after each visit, I spent time evaluating the pros and cons of each school.
When I visited Loyola, it just felt like the perfect fit academically, athletically and socially.
During my meeting with (Head) Coach (Charley) Toomey, (Assistant) Coach (Matt) Dwan and (Assistant) Coach (Dan) Chemotti, I felt very comfortable.
I liked the size of the campus, the location and the emphasis on academics and all of the players were very friendly and went out of their way to talk to me.
I knew Jack Runkel, a Loyola goalie, through Bulldogs Lacrosse Club and through his brother Sam, a Bulldogs teammate. Jack was able to answer lots of my questions about what it was like to be a Greyhound and go to school at Loyola. I am so excited about my decision to commit to Loyola. I just feel it’s the right place for me.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was very fortunate to have visited Penn State, the University of Michigan, Denver, Hofstra and Fairfield. I also considered Notre Dame and Ohio State.
All of the coaches I met on my visits were great and I really appreciated the amount of time they spent with me explaining their programs and showing me around their schools and giving advice on the recruiting process.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I am a bigger goalie and tend to be loud. I think my clearing and communication are the two best parts of my game.
What areas of your game have you been working to improve on?
I will be working on all aspects of my game, particularly my foot speed. I realize in order to play at the next level, I need to keep striving to improve. Now that I have committed, I feel more pressure than ever to play my best every game.
Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
There have been so many people who have helped and encouraged me along the way. I started playing lacrosse in the second grade. In sixth grade, (current New Canaan High School head coach) Alex Whitten, who was the Weston High School coach at the time, encouraged me to get into the goal.
During middle school, I was very fortunate to work with our assistant high school coach, Josh Thorton. Josh is a great attackmen who played at Fairfield and having him shoot on me for the past couple of years has been a huge help.
My high school coach John Mathews helped in communicating with the college coaches.
Of course the Bulldog coaches Brian White, Gerry Fay and Graham Niemi, who runs the program, have been great. Graham believed in me from the first day I joined Bulldogs and that gave me the confidence to pursue playing at the D-I level.
What travel team do you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in last summer?
I play for Bulldog Lacrosse Club. Last summer, I played at Maverik Showtime, Crab Feast and Tri-State. In the fall, I played at Philly Showcase and was selected to the Fab 40 All Stars.
