For the last two years, Garden City rode an unyielding defense to back-to-back appearances in the New York State Class B championship game.

So far this young season, the Trojans have taken a different route to success.

And it’s downright offensive.

Literally.

GC has racked up 41 goals in its first three games — all victories.

The Trojans’ most recent triumph was their most impressive yet — 12-9 over visiting Suffolk County Class A power Ward Melville.

Harvard-bound attackman Devin Dwyer had four goals and two assists in the win against Ward Melville as GC outscored the Patriots 4-1 in the third quarter to go ahead 9-7.

Liam Kennedy (pictured above) and Ryan Norton each had three goals. Kennedy scored six goals in the Syosset win.

The Section 1 regular season is now officially under way.

Action began as John F. Kennedy Catholic played its first game on its new turf field with a 12-4 win over Pearl River, a team that beat the Gaels 10-1 last season.

There was also plenty of preseason action today, with many of the region’s top teams involved in scrimmages and tournaments. Be sure to read the “Comments” section of the “Gameday” post for Saturday for reader reports on the action.

Somers’ Red/Gray Tournament featured several of Section 1’s top contenders as well as New Jersey’s Don Bosco Prep, CHSAA three-time champion St. Anthony’s and Jericho.

St. Anthony’s played well defensively despite being without senior star Tim Stackpole, who could be out for the season with a hip injury. There is a chance he could return late in the season.

In other injury news, Suffern’s Kevin McNally, an attackman/midfielder bound for the University at Albany, said he expects to return to action in time for the Mounties’ April 5 home game against John Jay. McNally suffered a broken jaw injury when he took a stick to the face playing box lacrosse in the offseason.

GC is looking pretty good, faceoffs may need some work.

Picking GC to beat St.Pauls. GC looks pretty strong so far and SP is down from last season. Will be SP’s 7th game vs GC’s 4th.
