As we noted here yesterday, a handful of Long Island teams played their openers last week.

Most, though, will be getting thing started this week. Many Section 1 and some Section 9 teams get things started next week, with most Connecticut and New Jersey squads getting going the week after that.

In boys action today, Mount Sinai hosts Longwood at 4 p.m., Wheatley plays at Valley Stream and Uniondale visits Clarke in 4:30 p.m. games.

Shoreham-Wading River, which has a preseason schedule as tough as anyone, has a scrimmage today at Ward Melville at 3:30 p.m.

Girls action includes seven games in Nassau County today, including a 4:15 game between Farmingdale and host Wantagh.

Sachem North, behind four goals by Eric Talbot, won 9-7 at Archbishop Spalding in Maryland on Friday.

Also on Friday, Eric Marzocca’s overtime goal gave North Babylon a 15-14 win over Half Hollow Hills West.

In games Saturday, defending Long Island Class C champ Bayport-Blue Point beat Bay Shore 13-8.

While we’re talking about Long Island teams, scroll down for links to MSG Varsity’s three-part Long Island preview specials that aired last week on “High School SportsDesk.” (Previews for other tristate regions will be broadcast the new two weeks.)
