There’s little doubt that St. Anthony’s and Garden City are not only two of the elite programs on Long Island, but in the nation as well.

Today, the two powerhouses scrimmaged and St. Anthony’s pulled out a hard-fought win.

While we all know it’s never a good idea to put too much stock in scrimmage results, one aspect of today’s matchup bodes well for the Friars.

Senior midfielder Brendan Conroy won 16 of the 17 faceoffs he took, in addition to scoring a goal.

So who better to provide a read on 2012 St. A’s than the Army-bound standout.

Now, here are Brendan’s perspectives on the upcoming season.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I’ve been training with my faceoff coach (Matt Schomburg) every Sunday for a couple of hours and I’ve also been doing cross-fit workouts five days a week.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are    some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule is very competitive this year. We are playing some great teams that we’ve never played before, like Malvern Prep (Pa.), Somers and La Costa Canyon (California).

I always look forward to playing Chaminade because they are our biggest rival and it’s always a great game, but I’m also looking forward to playing La Costa Canyon because they’re one of the best teams on the west coast.

We have some great scrimmages lined up. We just played Garden City and it was a great warmup to head into the season. We are also scrimmaging West Islip, Massapequa and La Salle in Rhode Island.

What player or players on your team do you think will surprise people this season?
I’m not sure there will be any surprises. We have a team of very talented and hard-working kids. Most of the team is committed to play In college.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I’m working hard to make sure possession will be our greatest strength. Our attack is also very strong, but mostly we have (UNC-bound) Kieran Burke in goal.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
In the CHSAA the race has always been between St. Anthony’s and Chaminade. Both teams are always very strong and it can go either way. But I’m confident in my team.
