Looking for a team that could emerge from under the radar on Long Island?
Northport could be a prime candidate.
The Tigers have a solid squad that includes three Division I-bound players.
The latest commitment was made by attackman Sean Gilroy, as we told you earlier today on Twitter.
The adept finisher, who is heading into his junior season, made a name for himself by scoring 16 goals after making the varsity squad as a freshman.
Gilroy’s sophomore season ended with a four-goal, one-assist effort in a 12-9 loss to Ward Melville in the Suffolk Class A quarterfinals.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Sean on his commitment:
What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factors in my decision were really the academics, and the fact that it’s school where I wouldn’t have to pay back too many student loans. I wanted to go to a school that could really benefit me in the long run. I feel that Binghamton could provide me a great education that would give me a better chance of getting a job after graduating college, and not be in debt.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Rutgers, Cornell and Rollins College. I visited all those schools at least once.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My movement off the ball to get open for a shot, and using my strength to get past my defender. I really like to drive my man hard up the back left side of the cage, and then feel where he is trying to push me to, and use that to make my move.
What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
My feeding. I need to find the open guy quicker when the double team comes.
What are your expectations for Northport this season? What games are you looking forward to the most? What players do you think will be surprises?
I believe our team can go very far into the playoffs this season. We are a young team with a lot of talent. As long as we play each game to our potential there’s no doubt we will have a very successful season.
The games I’m looking forward to the most would be the games against the teams that are seeded higher than us. We can play with anyone and we need to show other teams that we can.
On our team this year I think senior captain Jeff Cannon will have a major role to play. He is one of our best defensemen and he will be the guy that will shut down the other team’s best player, and run our defense from the field.

Gilroy has one of the best shots ive ever seen!
