The number of current high school sophomores making college commitments is at an all-time high.
The latest came over the weekend as Sachem North standout defender Michael Aronow verballed to Penn State.
The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Aronow, a sophomore, is an unselfish, team-first player with strong skill skills who has been developing his lacrosse skills since the age of 6.
In case you missed it, we provided some thoughts on Aronow as an athlete and student from Sachem North coach and dean of students Jay Mauro in a story posted here on Saturday.
Now, let’s get Michael’s thoughts on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Penn State is a great school, one of the best in the nation. The campus, the athletic facilities are second to none. Coach (Jeff) Tambroni and his staff made me feel right at home. I also like that it is only 4 1/2 hours away, so my parents and younger brothers can come see me play.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited and considered UNC, Maryland and Hofstra. Other schools in consideration were Michigan and Rutgers.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I’m a good player on-ball and off-ball. I always keep my head on a swivel. I ‘m not a flashy player. I just play hard and get the job done.
What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
There’s always room for improvement. If I had to pick one area I would like to improve, it would be transitioning into the offensive zone.
How does this year’s Sachem North team look? What are the team’s strengths? What games are you looking forward to the most?
This year’s team is looking great. We are an unselfish group and play as a team. We have great coaches. Those are our strengths.
Games I am looking forward to are West Islip, Smithtown West, Ward Melville and everyone else who tries and gets in our way of winning a state championship.
