Jake Froccaro is a talented player whose highlight reel is as impressive as his No. 12 national ranking among current high school seniors by Inside Lacrosse.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Port Washington attackman/midfielder also has some strong bloodlines.

His older brother, Jeff, is a standout at Princeton, who was a second-team All-Ivy League selection as a freshman in 2010. His younger brother, Joey, is a current varsity teammate. His uncles, Vinnie and Stephen Sombrotto played lacrosse in college at Hofstra and C.W. Post, respectively, and then professionally.

Jake Froccaro also has the potential to achieve big things at the next level in lax. He’ll be joining his brother at Princeton.

But first, he has one final varsity season.

And for his high school team, it promises to be an eventful one under new coach Tom Rooney.

Now, here are Jake’s perspectives on the 2012 season:

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
Throughout the fall, I did a lot of weight training and running. During the winter season, I play basketball for my high school which keeps me in good shape.

Our lacrosse team has a new head coach this year, Tom Rooney, who has brought a lot of enthusiasm and has kept our team together throughout the fall. We participated in a few tournaments and both a fall and winter league.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
This year’s schedule is unique because we are able to play some very competitive non-league games including two teams from Suffolk County and scrimmages against Manhasset and Cold Spring Harbor.

Our team is definitely excited to play Farmingdale, Hicksville, Massapequa and Syosset, who are some of the toughest teams in our conference. Also, we will be participating in the Daniel Hand Tournament in Madison, Conn., which should be a great experience for the team.

What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
There are a bunch of players on our team who I think will surprise some people this season. Defensively, I think senior Joe Mele will have another strong season. On the offensive end, junior midfielder Richard Greenberg, sophomore attackman Luke Rizzo, and of course I’m really looking forward to playing with my brother Joey again.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I believe our strengths this season will be our team chemistry and discipline. We have a great group of guys on the team who listen, play well with one another and are extremely competitive. Hopefully these characteristics will benefit us in the long run.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
I think some of the top teams in our conference will include Farmingdale, Syosset, Hicksville and Massapequa. Our team is hoping to improve each day so that we can be in a position to compete for a championship in May.

Good job Jake!! Best to you and the family. Now you and Joe Mele with the rest of the Port gang, bring home the championship!!! Hope to catch a game or two this year, your Section 1 fans

A great bloodline for this player, Vinnie Sombrotto and the late John Driscoll (of MHS and UVA) were the best middies of their time imho.

  3. Jmele says:

good luck Jake and I hope you bring home a ring as a rookie with the tigers next year along with your brother Jeff. if anyone can do it it’s you two guys. you got the power.

Great laxer/great teamate. Made a really good showing when LI gold-medaled the 2010 Empires.

  5. reLAX says:

Sounds like a real team player. Good luck this season at Port.

Looks like Port is going to have a great year. I also can say great things about Junior Midfielder Christian Kane, who has had great drive and shown serious leadership on the team. Also Ryan Gary, being only a Freshman, he led the team in goals this fall league with 12. Lastly, there JV goalie looks really promising to fill in the spot for Nick Ferrero, current Varsity Goalie, for when he is feeling winded.

  7. IslandLaxpert says:

Does Port have enough depth to have a big year?

  8. laxrecruit777 says:

Also, Ryan Gary is one of the smartest kids on the squad. He is getting looks from schools like Princeton, Harvard, Yale, and UNC.

  9. 495 says:

Would be nice to see the Port team step this season.

  10. 495 Lax says:

Would love to see Port emerge as a contender.

  11. G-Lax says:

In my unbiased opinion, Jake is the best overall player on the Island, with James Pannell, Ryan Lukacovic, Ryan Hunter and Justin Guterding up there.

  12. North Fork says:

Great player, better person. Have a terrific season Jake!

  13. East lax says:
