Next up in our preseason “Player’s perspectives” is a standout from one of the top Class A programs on Long Island.

And one that has churned out about as many collegiate recruits the last few years as just about anyone.

We’re talking about Sachem North and senior attackman/midfielder Cody Petillo.

Known for his quickness and dodging ability, the 5-foot-10 Petillo committed to Rutgers as a junior.

Petillo will be one of the cogs in what should once again be one of the region’s most explosive offenses.

Now, here’s Cody’s perspective on the 2012 season:

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I’ve gotten back in the weight room and started lifting again and also began speed training at Revolution Athletics. I have also been going to shooting indoor shooting clinics and indoor practices with my team.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
We have scrimmages against Westminster, Elwood-John Glenn, Massapequa and Eastport-South Manor. Our regular season schedule is looking very good. I’m most looking forward to our games against Sachem East, Smithtown West, Ward Melville and West Islip.

What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I don’t think that one single person will surprise some people but more my whole team.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think that my team’s offense will be the strength this year.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
I view the race as being pretty much the same the past few years. Though I feel this year will be a much more rewarding season than the past three. I think the contending teams will be mine, Ward Melville, Smithtown West, and West Islip. I’m also not counting out Smithtown East. They should be good competition this season.

Maybe this year we will thrive on being overlooked?

If the defense can step up, SN can certainly be in the mix in a very competitive league.
