Logan Williamson’s progression as a lacrosse player has been as steady as it’s been impressive.

A natural athlete who also excels in football, the 6-foot, 185-pound defenseman/long-stick midfielder combines a strong understanding of the game with an aggressive style of play.

The Fordham Prep junior, who continues to grow his game, will have an opportunity to do just that in his two remaining varsity seasons with the Rams, and then, at Fairfield University.

Williamson has verbally committed to the Stags.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Logan on his commitment.recruiting_update

What were the main factors in your decision?
A few things. The location was definitely a major plus for Fairfield. It wasn’t too far from home, but far enough.

The coaching staff at Fairfield made me feel great when i took my visit. (Head) Coach (Andy) Copelan, (Assistant) Coach (Tony) Vallance and (Assistant) Coach (Kevin) Conry were all very comforting and made it an easy choice.

The school itself is a very good fit coming from Fordham Prep, another Jesuit school. The academics are amazing and I’m confident I will have a good future after I graduate.

From a lacrosse aspect, the team is pumping on all cylinders and only getting better. I will be surprised if they aren’t a Top 10 contender by my freshman year.

The whole Fairfield aspect just fit me – the team, the academics and the people.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was also considering UMass, Villanova and Dartmouth. I visited UMass and Fairfield. My decision was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My style of play is definitely position first and aggressive. I try and dissect the game as it comes, just like an NFL quarterback, and I’m always learning. I like to push the ball on offense in transition and make plays happen. It’s my favorite part of the game – handling the rock.

My top strengths would probably be my footwork, one-on-one ability and knowledge of the game itself.

What are your thoughts on Fordham’s season in 2011 and what are the team’s goals for 2012?
The FP season in 2011 was one of the best the school’s ever had. Through all the guys on the team we developed together and were one of the best teams I’ve ever played on. A lot of the credit goes out to (Head) Coach (Len) De Lucia and (Assistant) Coach (Ryan) Gorrup crafting  the most dynamic and powerful offense in the league. (Assistant) Coach (Justin) Henry has been crucial in my development as a lacrosse player. He understands my playing style and ability perfectly and will never let me take a break until I’m the best player I can be. In 2011, he coached one of the best defenses Fordham has seen, along with being named assistant coach of the year.

In 2012, we have full intentions of making a run all the way to the state championship. We got a taste of it last year and we will not be holding anything back, and giving 100 percent all the time.

I believe the main reason Fordham has recently had so much success is because the players themselves have the willingness to work.

I was lucky enough to get to play next to guys like Chris Smith, Tommy Whelan, Matt Casella, Joe Regan, Chris Sullivan and Ben Andreycak. They’re all Fordham greats that have pushed me to be the best I can be.

How has playing football helped you develop as a lacrosse player?
In football, I’ve developed a good awareness of what’s around me. While it’s improved my footwork and hand skills a lot, the biggest benefit I’ve picked up is the aggressiveness. Playing fullback and wide receiver, I’ve grown to enjoy contact and enjoy competition. It’s increased my tenacity as a player and fulfills my constant need to compete.

What were some of the highlights of playing for Prime Time’s travel team since 2008?
I’d say the biggest benefit Prime Time has given me is playing at such a high level and the support coaches show to every single player. Through guys like Nick Daniello, Chris Daniello, Ryder Bohlander and Nick Hautau, I’ve been shaped into a much different and better player than I would’ve been without Prime Time. Since eighth grade playing for Prime Time, my team has always played up in age and its helped tremendously in my development.
