Section 1 gets most of the attention when it comes to high school lacrosse in New York’s Hudson Valley.

But last year, Section 9 continued its steady progression with some statement wins against Section 1 teams, including Minisink Valley beating both Pearl River and Clarkstown South, Red Hook defeating Hastings  and Monroe-Woodbury downing Ossining.

While Warwick Valley lost its only game against a Section 1 team (falling to Nyack), it did finish 11-7 and won five of its final six games.

One of the main reasons for the Wildcats’ success was the play of senior attackman/midfielder James Kolesar.

Kolesar, who has been on varsity since his freshman year, has been the only Section 9 player to compete at the Section 1 All-Star Shootout at John Jay the last two years.

On Friday, he verbally committed to Western New England, as we reported on our “Updated recruiting review and commitment rundown.”

Now, here’s a Q&A with James on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision?
The competitiveness of the team within their conference, the coaching style of Coach (John) Klepacki which fits me perfectly, and overall the feel of the university from the size of the campus and the kids that go there. I believe that it is the best possible fit for me as a student and lacrosse player.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Washington College, Haverford College and Clark University. I visited all three and had an overnight official visit with Haverford.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
The first step of my dodge, my ability to finish and my lacrosse IQ, which is having the knowledge of what is the right thing to do in certain situations of the game.

I would describe my style of play as fast-paced and controlled, I love when everything within an offense is really upbeat and precise, when every move someone does works perfectly and the play you just uncovered makes everyone shocked and excited. It is the best part about lacrosse having everything at a non-stop fast pace.

What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
My consistency and overall confidence towards my play.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
My sophomore year was just about when I began to realize I had the potential to play lacrosse in college. I was playing on the varsity travel team along with gaining a starting varsity attack position at my high school. I began getting contacted from some colleges and my eyes truly opened up to the opportunities I had in front of me.

What were some of the big summer showcase events you’ve competed in the last couple of years and how did you do?
In the past couple of summer’s I have competed at Top 205 West and East, Blue Chip 225 Elite, Beantown Classic, UMass Classic, Battle of the Bay, Section 1 All-Star Shootouts and several tournaments with my club lacrosse team. I did relatively well in all of the showcases I attended. I completely loved the experiences I had in my summer playing and cannot wait to continue playing lacrosse.

Premiere team, up-and-coming university…way to go.

He will join Donovan (Yorktown), Zavarella (Ossining) and Bota (Mahopac).

    Congrats and good luck!
