The goal that playing Division I lacrosse could very well be a reality moved front and center into Nick Mariano’s mind when the Yorktown attackman earned a spot on the school’s varsity squad as a freshman.

Now, just over two years later, it’s become a reality.

Mariano has verbally committed to accept a scholarship offer from UMass.

Mariano, currently in the midst of football season as Yorktown’s starting quarterback, becomes the Huskers’ fifth college commit and second junior, joining Johns Hopkins-bound defenseman Trevor Koelsch.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Nick on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision to attend UMass?
It felt like I was a part of the team when I left the campus and the coaches treated me like one of the players.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered Hofstra, Delaware, Albany, Army and Syracuse and I also visited all these schools.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I’m an off-ball guy that likes to find openings to shoot. My style of play is very unselfish. I always try to find the open guy and a scorer.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I need to make adjustments in my dodging.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level and how long has it been a goal of yours?
My whole life, I’ve always wanted to play college lacrosse and I first realized it when I made varsity as a freshman.
