If you checked our “Updated recruiting review and commitment rundown” earlier this week, you learned that Brewster rising senior Harry Erickson has made his college choice.

The 6-foot-1, 171-pound Erickson, a defenseman who plays for the Prime Time summer travel team, has given a verbal commitment to the University at Albany.

Here’s a Q&A with Harry on his college choice.

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Albany?
The campus feeling that I got from Albany was a very appealing factor to me. I also really enjoyed my visit there. Being able to meet Coach (Scott) Marr and the rest of his coaching staff was a real pleasure.

They were accommodating to my family and me, and also made me feel comfortable. Albany also plays a great schedule full of high-level competition.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
During this process I also considered attending, Binghamton, Drexel, Fairfield, UMass and the Air Force Academy. I ended up visiting all of those schools with the exception of UMass and the Air Force Academy.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I believe that I will need to work on my size and strength. To make progress at the next level, this is an extremely crucial part of any athlete’s success. I will need to make sure that I am physically capable of handling what obstacles will be thrown in my direction.

I am committed to improving on this part of my game, and feel as though the coming year will be a time for me to push myself in this area.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I would have to say that the strengths in my game revolve around my ability to communicate well with my defense. Everything in a defense can work like clockwork if there is a person to step up and constantly say something.

I believe that this largely overlooked part of the game is important and something I take a lot of pride in. Another positive attribute that I believe distinguishes my style of play from others is my ability to lock down certain players. This has given me a solid foundation for my one on one game to develop and to turn defense into offense quickly. I would describe my style of play as very aggressive with a constant threat to create a fast paced transition game.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
As a player at Brewster my entire life, there have been a handful of leaders in the program that I have been able to both idolize and model after — one of which would have to be Zach Badalucco (defense, Marist).

Zach was a clutch defender for Brewster for a long time, and is arguably one of the best defenseman to ever leave Brewster High School. I loved his style and always tried to make it my own. Another more recent player whom I looked up to very much was goalkeeper Andrew Nicol (goalie, Vassar). Andrew is a lifelong friend, and was a fellow teammate of mine since I was in the seventh grade up until the time he graduated. His leadership on the field was unmatched by those around him while he played. He really showed me what it meant to be a team captain and a leader. Having both of these players in the program during my career, really helped a lot.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
I think that I realized I had the potential to play at the college level after my sophomore year on varsity. I began playing varsity as a freshman, but it wasn’t until that next year that I played a key roll in the defense for my team. I was forced to step up in the presence of a strong senior class and had a solid season. It was one of the most memorable experiences I have had so far, and I believe it gave me a whole new outlook on the game.
