With Yorktown star Conor Gately’s commitment to Marquette still very much in the news, we have more news on upstart Division I programs in the Midwest.

The University of Michigan, which like Marquette of the Big East, will be debuting its program in 2012. The Wolverines have decided to compete in the ECAC, which includes Ohio State.

In addition, the date of the first-ever Ohio State-Michigan lax battle is set. It will be April 14, 2012 at Michigan Stadium (also known as “The Big House”) prior to the Michigan spring football game.

News of Michigan’s intentions to launch a D-I lax program next year surfaced on April 22.

Michigan had perennially fielded one of the most successful MCLA teams, which has featured many players from the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region. Ohio State has also successfully recruited heavily in the tristate region.

May not be close this year, but should be a great battle for years to come. I envision large crowds if they continue to play it before the spring football games of each team especially.
