Justin Mabus and Yorktown are looking to advance to the state title game for the first time since 2008. The Huskers face Garden City in the Class B downstate semifinals at White Plains High School. GC fell to Jamesville-DeWitt last year in the state finals.

On the one hand, you have programs that have had their fill of state title-game appearances, like Yorktown, Garden City, Wilton and Darien.

And others — like Bronxville, Bayport-Blue Point (in just its eighth varsity season) and Shenendehowa — who have never been there before.

On the surface, all that would provide more than enough intrigue.

But yesterday, a new storyline emerged surrounding the team that is the currently the undisputed premier active dynasty in the tristate area now that eight-time Suffolk County Class A champion West Islip was denied a bid for a fifth state title in the last six years.

Darien’s Case Matheis told me yesterday morning that an MRI revealed he has a torn miniscus that requires surgery. He’s out for today’s state semi against Wilton and, should Darien win, Saturday’s state final.

If the Blue Wave are to make it “7 in ’11,” it will have to be minus No. 4.

Of course, Wilton-Darien is one of the most tradition-rich rivalries around. Darien, though, has won an astonishing 26 straight against the Warriors, with the last Wilton victory coming back in 1999.

You can catch the Wilton-Darien game on Thursday night at 7 on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14.

Before we move on to New York, in case you missed it, we just posted this year’s All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference team. You can check it out now by clicking here.

Another tradition-rich rivalry, at least in the postseason, is the one between Yorktown and Garden City. Yorktown has won four of seven state semifinal meetings against the Trojans. Ironically, the teams met in the regular season for the first time ever last year and Garden City rolled to a 14-3 win.

Both teams are red-hot. GC has won 14 straight, fueled by a close defense of seniors Stephen Jahelka (Harvard), Brian Fischer (Harvard) and J.P. Burnside (Penn State). Yorktown has been dominant on both offense and defense during a five-game win streak, outscoring those five foes 96-23.

You can catch the Yorktown-Garden City game live at 6:30 p.m. today at msgvarsity.com and on tape on Friday at 7 p.m. on iO Channel 14. The Shenendehowa-Farmingdale Class A state semifinal game will also be streamed live today on msgvarsity.com.

In addition, be sure to check out Tom Liodice’s in-game score updates and analysis on msgvarsity.com as well as Twitter updates from Isaac Cass at the New York state semifinals (@MSGV_icass or by clicking here).

Note: Because of the heat advisory, the starting time for the first game of today’s downstate tripleheader was moved to 4:30 p.m. from 3:30 p.m., affecting the other two starting times as well. (See rundown below for the updated starting times.)

In case you missed our state semifinal preview on “High School SportsDesk” last night that premiered at 6 p.m., you can check it out here.

As always, be sure to weigh in with score updates and comments while you’re at the games today.

Before we run down today’s semifinal slate, the weather could make its presence known today.

There is a heat advisory in effect from noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Under NYSPHSAA rules, play must be suspended for 45 minutes if the heat index reaches 96 degrees or higher, and the game itself must be suspended if the real feel temp is 96 or above an hour before the scheduled starting today. (Today at White Plains, it’s expect to hover right around that mark in the hours leading up to and during the first game of the downstate semifinal in the accuweather.com hourly forecast.)

  1. The Original Crop 2009 says:

    Yes. It has happened.

Nice to check back in and give my prediction for the state semi final game in the heat of the sahara. 9-8 Yorktown in a thriller. Yorktown defends the county well and garden city and the rest of long island has a long, bumper to bumper ride home.

    • Bob says:

      GC 10

      To much D from GC
      Not enough O from Town.

    • Bob says:

What was the final of the Town GC game? my system must be on fritz due to the heat. Did I hear correctly Town up for most of game put just could not Close deal. Unfortunate again, Congrats to all the players on all teams

The Crop is calling for a white out today!

  3. Joe Lombardi says:

Because of the heat advisory, the starting times for today’s downstate tripleheader games at White Plains High School have each been delayed, with the first two games now starting an hour later than originally scheduled, and the final game, one half-hour later. Here’s the new rundown with the updated starting times:

    Class A: Farmingdale (Section 8 ) vs. Shenendehowa (Section 2), 4:30 p.m.

    Class B: Garden City (Section 8 ) vs. Yorktown (Section 1), 6:30 p.m.

    Class C: Bayport-Blue Point (Section 11) vs. Bronxville (Section 1), 8:30 p.m.

    • luvlax says:

Bronxville coach informed players and parents the game started at 9pm?

      • Laxtime says:

Realistically it would have to be 9 because of the break time needed between games even if they wanted to go for 8:30 that would be tough if not impossible to pull off.

  4. slacrosse says:

Thx Joe. Good to catch all three.

  5. Syracuse says:

If anyone is not going today, I’ll be posting as detailed updates as I can on the blog as often as I can. Enjoy the games.

  118. Funny says:

thats a shame. Great seasons for both Ytown and Bville. Both should be very proud of their seasons!

  119. rlaxfamily says:

Ty Schult gets the MVP for both teams, Yorktown and GC. Ty was a on fire. Worked his tail off out there in the heat. Too bad for Yorktown. They certainly could have taken this team down. Marr and staff did a great job planning out the game plan. GC did not leave much room for mistakes and when Ytown made one they were able to take advantage. Hell of a game boys.

  120. slacrosse says:

    Dale/Shen

Congrats to Dale. Dale has some lethal offense aided by lots of FO wins. Aside from Tuttle, #14 looked great. Think their O is the real strength of their team. Good luck vs Ithaca. Should be a great game.

Dale did rip some non-stoppers for goals but I’d be very surprised if the Syracuse-bound Shen goalie thought this was one of his better games.

    Town/GC

Congrats to GC. Top team as advertised. Good luck vs JDW. That is gonna be another REAL tough one for GC.

Sure a win was the goal for Town but great effort by the Huskers!!. Accounted yourselves and Section 1 superbly. GC knew they were in a dogfight real early starting with Town going up 3-0 after bout 5 minutes in 1st Q!!. Couple of mistakes capitalized on by GC to their credit made the difference.

    Bville/BP

Congrats to BP. Scrappy team that came back. Good luck vs Cazenovia.

Great effort Bville playing strongly vs. a good, tough, scrappy team from LI. Impressive effort with dominating first half and solid play in the second.I thought on the whole that Bville looked like the stronger team.

Must admit did not understand why McCormick did not take the ball down the field himself (Bville down by 1)with 20-25 seconds left? Then he got stuck in the defensive zone watching the game end?? Too bad but again, Bville accounted itself and Section 1 very well.

    • ReLAX says:

Agree that bville was the stronger team. After hearing all the complaining from the GC & Bayport fans, I’m pulling for JD & Cazenovia! Farmingdale’s gonna win their 1st state championship & I’ll pull for the Dalers. Fans need to act as classy as the teams they follow. GC’s a great program but the whining & crying coming from their fans was ugly & the Bayport fans were just as bad!

      • USSOCOM says:

        Whining and crying?
How many GC fans come on here and bitch the way you do? You’re the one Whining and crying, Town got beat by a better team plain and simple, DEAL WITH IT!!

  121. ReLAX says:

Bville should of tied the game & put it into OT! They’re a midfield driven team, that allowed J Grass to go one on one down the stretch. If he would of drawn the D & dumped the ball to Near or Charlie they would of tied it. Bprt moved the ball very well on O. Hate to say it, but bville was outcoached. They had the talent to win that game. I knew something was up when they didn’t beat Glens Falls by more. Now we all found out why a team needs to play good comp during the season. Look at town, They were in it with a national power all game because they played the toughest schedule of any team around. Bville wins that game if they were more prepared!

    • lax says:

its easy to rag on bville for losing a game that everyone expected them to lose by 6, that game was an even matchup throughout the entire game and it came down to the effort Bprt gave and the failure for the bville offense to close out the game. Horgan coached a great game against a great team its ridiculous to downplay that

      • Lax Games says:

Everyone thought they would lose by 6? Not with their top line O talent. They will be back as the talent pipeline continues and Class C can be had.

Story line for the day is Sec 1 stood up to LI best and played them relatively even. Would have been interesting to see Pac D against Dalers O.

should be fun on Saturday with weather cooling upstate.

        Enjoy summer ball everyone!!

I agree the ville got outworked, outplayed, but most importantly when you’re up 6-3 @ half & know you can/should win…the coach needs to have control & for that reason they were outcoached!

        • ummmmm says:

they werent up 9 goals, they were up 3, that lead can vanish in moments, you could go to the bathroom come back, tie game or even lead for BBP, its lacrosse, dont start going after coaches over a 3pt lead… no need to point fingers to at any part of any program that made it this far …

Mike DiBlasio was interviewed @ halftime of the CSH game. The night b/4 he was in his backyard doing shooting drills on shot placement…that’s preparation & dedication & that’s why #7 & the Phantoms are going Upstate for Sat’s Championship game! They overachieved their way there!!!

Seriously Joe? Come on with this guy…..

ReLax – you need to RELAX – you seem to have all the answers after the game ends. You sound like a wantabe Coach – can’t believe no school has hired you???
It is bush league to call out high school players by name in the manner you are doing it.
BXV had an outstanding breakthrough season and was the closest of all Section 1 teams to advance. Their coach was Coach of the Year.

Great season Yorktown, you played hard against a national power. You should all be proud boys.

  126. Yorktown vs. GC '12??? says:

someone get in touch with the powers that be… Yotkown / GC regular season match-up ??? without knowing if Manhasset will be in B again next year, and i feel like GC is losing more than ‘Town but 100% sure, it’s certainly not a sure thing they would meet again next year. I would bet the house on ‘Town making it back to the state semis next year, even if Nisky moves back down to B.

I’m already exited for winter to find out how much Section 1 screws things up next year with leagues and schedules and such… You would think Town wants to keep playing St.A’s, Chaminade, Darien, Ridgefield, Wilton, and you’d hate to see them lose one of those games so maybe swap out Shen or Smithtown for GC

thats just what i would want to see, doesnt mean GC wants a piece, or that Town wants to change up their schedule..

My two cents..and I know thats what they are worth.

    GC vs Town
I thought this was one of the best games of the year. There was a ton of talent on both sides of the field. We all thought we knew a few things going in.

Town likes to run a bit more than GC.
    GC plays methodical, precision Offense.
Garden City plays some of the best one on one d in the nation.
Town has struggled defensively at times this season with their slides, etc.

After the game I have to say I am more impressed with both teams than I was going in.

GC can play up tempo and slow it to a snails pace while being comfortable. I think Town clamping down on Gordon inside was huge. I know he scored but I dont think his typical crease 6 yarders he was getting all year.

I was impressed with the Town O vs GC D matchup on both sides as well. Town has a real good O with 5 of the 6 guys on O possible being D1 guys. Fischer was great all around on Mabus and Schuldt. Schuldt had some shots but missed high and hit a few pipes. Mariano and Fusco did not dodge one on one too much and had some shots between them. Gately was wonderful, one of quickest attackmen Ive seen all year. Against 3 dmen who kept switching to cover him, he kept distance and played great. I dont think GC slid really at all. The old ‘we are better than you’ so we will not slide D. Seemed to work as they controlled some of the matchups. That helps as you really struggle to attack Fischer and Burnside.

Towns d slid continuosly and did a great job of it. Dwyer is a great player who if crease is open, he will find the open man. Berkerey was held down a little. Great player with a cannon of a shot. Towns D played well except for some lapses. The clearing game being the biggest one. Rushed a few and GC took advantage with 2 one on one goals.

I know GC loses a ton after this year but wish them well as Im sure they will be back strong next year competing for a Nassau title. Marino on one end and Dwyer on the other will keep them strong next year. They may be reigning state champs and will have a bigger X on their back than ever with people wanting to get a piece. I believe Finnel does a wonderful coaching job as well. Love to watch two smart teams play like on Wed night.

Town should be better, maybe. Losing Schuldt, Mabus, Fahey, 2 dmids, and Saliano will hurt. The whole attack is back, all 4. 2nd line of mids who did well against GC is back. 3 of 4 faceoff guys back D should be better with Koelsch, Cooley, Fusco, and sophs that were on varsity all year. Goalie battle will be interesting to watch. Lots of experience and talent should get them back to this game and see what happens.

Refs appeared to let them play most of the night which is good at this level. They missed a few high hits late but overall pretty good job by the stripes.
All in all a great game Wed night.

I stayed for Bxville BBP game. Class C is down a bit as I thought both D’s were not the strongest. Some real offensive talent on both sides shined Wednesday. Little chaotic ending and you get that often in HS lacrosse at this level for they are just kids.

Good luck to GC and BBP on Saturday. Dalers have their hands full as I have seen Ithaca play. Great offensive team so game could be a real high scoring one. Dalers love to play high tempo so this will be a fun one to watch for sure.
